Well, I mentioned this once before, and got no response, but I've explored it just a bit more, so I thought I would bring it up again. If I have a user in a subfolder, with a role that has every permission set, just like the manager role, he cannot access images. He can add and delete them, but if he clicks on them, he cannot access the image's manage_main screen. If I give him the manager role, with exactly identical permissions (and every level between has permissions set to acquire, on EVERY permission) then he can view the manage_main page!
