RE: [Zope] Re: [ADMIN] Plea for sanity (was:Re: Re: full-text retrieval app)
Just to provide another perspective... Most of the other lists I participate in ask that you respond personally to the individual who sent the original email. That person is supposed to summarize responses back to the group. This significantly decreases the volume of email traffic going to everyone... but it won't work if you have a lot of lazy people on the list who don't like to summarize. I'm on a number of lists that set Reply-to: and we simply do not have these discussions there. Zope lists are the only ones I'm on where I routinely get personal replies that were apparently intended for the list, and routinely see threads about this same topic over and over.
+1 on Reply-to. I regard this as optimizing for the common case. :)
Share your knowledge, spread the word...
What's the "good" reason for replying only to the sender as default? If I want to write only to the sender (this happens once or twice a year, while I reply more often to the list...;)), I'll can cope with Copy&Paste his/her address.
Replying to the list should be the default of a community.
We are a community, aren't we?
1+ on Reply-To
Cheers, Maik

Or people who subscribe to lots of lists and have full-time jobs that don't include being a human mailing list. I mean, what are message threads for? If everyone posts to the list, a person can quickly scan through a topic to see the responses. Relying on the indidual recipients to summarize the replies (best replies? all replies? what's not pertinent to him may be pertinent to another list member)? I prefer a collaborative model - all can see what all have contributed. And my 2 cents is: I prefer 'reply to list' to be default. Why don't we hold a poll to see how many members are really interested in changing the preferences? Seems a bit easier than a massive thread that people stop taking an interest in which talks about etiquette, no? On Fri, 2003-02-07 at 10:26, Rob Boyd wrote:

This happens roughly every six months or so ....

Let's hope that everyone who replies to the poll posting responds to the poster and not to the list... +1 on Reply-To being the list. (And don't tell me to set up procmail correctly - I am using an ISP at my job that I have no control over.)
