Virtual PC: Running Linux and Zope in a virtual PC
Hi, besides all the else testing, I am now testing Connectix's VirtualPC. So far I've read quite good reviews and heard about success with running Linux as a virtual computer in Windows. I will be soon testing how it feels to run Linux and Windows same time and do development on both. Basicly it could be possible to even run multiple virtual computers and practise complicated ZEO-setups in one single computer. Why am I doing this? Out of curiosity - and also because I am selling my Linux box. Running VC could be an option for doing dualbooting. Of course there are the ups and downs, but I have an itch that this could be a good way for some Zope developers to do new things. Any thougths or ideas for what to test and play? -huima

Out of curiosity - and also because I am selling my Linux box. Running So you're selling your Linux box -- why? What's wrong with that? In favor of what? I'm guessing that it's MacOS X. If that's the case, then you should be able to run Zope directly, see http://www.zope.org/Members/jshell/ZopeOnOSX for some basics. I did a search for Mac OS and found it...

The best way to run a development Zope on Windows, IMO, is Cygwin. http://www.zope.org/Members/dgeorgieff/howto_zope_cvs_on_cygwin Russell Hires wrote:

Well the Linux-box is great and I'm not yet getting my first own Mac, since PowerBook Titanium is still too expensive. The Linux-box has been my firewall and server, but I'm moving in near future to another country and also to a smaller place, where I will not have the luxury of space or a network connection. So my Linux-box would be most of the time unused, still I would like to run some services from time to time on Linux - just to test that everything works and keep memory fresh. I tried to run Redhat 7.3 now on Virtual PC and it seems ok, as long as I keep out of XFree ,-) Have to keep testing and setup something evil just for fun. If nothing else, during this trial period is atleast a possibility to take nice screenshots. -huima

I don't know about Virtual PC, but I've been working in VMware for more than a year and it's rock-stable. Admittedly I use it the other way around: main system is Linux, and Windows run virtually. Linux has Zope installed and Windows access it over a virtual network. Sufficiently fast on an old machine (Pentium II Celeron 400MHz, 192MB RAM). VMware is downloadable and a one month trial license is also available for free. -- Milos Prudek
imo, virtual server systems are a great way to develop and clone dev environments. i've been using vmware as of late for this and its been very nice. insert-2-cents-remark -kapil i've been using On Tuesday 30 July 2002 06:14 pm, Heimo Laukkanen wrote:

To run windows under Linux, and if you don't need stuff like DirectX, then Win4lin is an *awesome* solution, practically native windows speed, event sometimes faster than windows, and in any case much much faster than Vmware. Florent kapil thangavelu <kthangavelu@earthlink.net> wrote:
