Ok, that's what I came up with, too. But in the following
situation: 

Three distinct content types that have been used quite a lot are to be
consolidated and represented as one type with the possibility to choose
from three different visual representations.

Handling missing/different attributes is not the problem, but what is
the best way to achieve this, if there is any?
