But isn't the "Compound element" a special cases that is needed because 
editing content through the web sucks? So basically it's whole reson for 
existing is for easy editing through the web?

If you want to edit via ftp and webdav, why not just use ordinary 
folders and ZPT/Dtml with regular Zope objects in them??
