This is on hold because Florent did express some concerns regarding the 
way aliases are configured:

So far there was no further discussion. I don't know if I was able to 
convince Florent or what other people think.

If there are no further responses until tommorow evening, I'll asume 
everybody can at least live with merging the current implementation from 
the branch.
