Is there now a separate flag for this behavior, or is it *only* toggled
by the doing-too-much-already "debug mode"?

I'd trying to get *more* granular control over my startup options, 
not less :-\  For this reason I'd like to request that no new features
be added to debug mode unless they can be toggled independently
(i.e. something like "-D --some-new-feature=0"  if you want  
debug mode without the new feature, or "--some-new-feature=1" if
you want the new feature without the 10,000 other things that debug
mode does...)
