I agree it shouldnt be necessary for correctly executing a test, but I dont 
see a problem with relying on the log for *debugging* a failed test.

I find STUPID_LOG_FILE=/dev/stderr is particularly convenient.

I would argue against this change if there was any chance of unintended side 
effects. I dont think this applies in this case. The changes are small, and 
risk-free. Keep the change.
