My methods:

- Download unread mail into your Palm for easy reading when commuting or on 
the couch.
- Use an email client that can thread mail like a newsreader, like The Bat! 
(http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/). in combination with filtering, it makes 
for a very clear overview of your mail.
