It isn't very hard to make a tarball which doesn't do this, by the way.  For a
simple example, see http://www.zope.org/Members/4am/packProduct

Of course, if you have to deal with an existing flawed tarball, you can always
untar it in a temporary location which doesn't have a 'lib' directory, then move
the product's directory to the correct location and delete the empty
'lib/python/Products' from the temporary location.
