Not sure if this is what your looking for, but it works for me.

<dtml-in Catalog sort=duedate size=25 start=query_start>  Will bring up
the oldest records first.

<dtml-in Catalog sort=duedate reverse size=25 start=query_start> Will
bring up the newest records first
