Try specifying the ip address in the mailhost server name, instead of the
name...
Also, which version of exchange ? 5.5? 2000?
There's many authentication settings / limits/ filters that might be messing
you up.
See if you can telnet to port 25 internally, and do an smtp sendmail from
the command line...
