Are you under the mistaken apprehension that _anyone_ _ever_ types "index.html" unless they're a) told to, or b) trying to be clever and look for a directory without one? No one should ever have to type the name of an "HTML file", IMAO -- not that there's such a thing anyway. In a traditional server environment, this would imply that there was no "index.html" -- which would mean that people could see lists of raw files that you might not want them to see -- probably not a Good Thing.
