Thanks Jake, The person handling the s/a work on the server says that he tried installing python 2.3.x on Krud 9 (a flavor of Red Hat 9) and he can't get it to work. What version of Linux are you running? Jake wrote:

The 2.7 branch with 2.3.3 should be pretty darn stable (linux of course).
