Dear All, got an installation problem. This is with the new release on last Friday Dec 11. I am using Apache 1.3.0 on Linux 2.0.34 (RedHat 5.0) on a Pentium box. I have apache run on port 80 and wishes to place Zope on it. Here are the steps that I did: -- copy the mod_rewrite directives from the instruction to httpd.conf -- copy the <Location> directive to authenticate /cgi-bin/Zope -- create the password file with htpasswd -- copy the Zope.cgi to the appropriate /cgi-bin directory I am hoping to run Zope with Apache on regular port 80 and so I restart httpd and try http://mymachine/cgi-bin/Zope/manage I did get the authenticate box, and I got thru and the browser runs for about 15 secs and then I got a resource unavailable (102) fail to connect error. The page seems to be generated by Zope. I wonder if there is something else that I need to fire up on the Zope side. I dug thru the help files, no mention of anything. I did try the python web server and access Zope that way, it works fine though. Any comments on what I did to make Apache and Zope runs? Things to check: - Are you sure you have mod_rewrite compiled in your Apache? I've done a couple of relatively small experiments with this, once using DTML over a sequence of Tabula records to generate a good size XML file to test an XML parser. So it was an XML expression of objects in the database, but using DTML allowed me to make the XML structure that I wanted independant of the structure of the Zope database or the Tabula database or what-have-you. And even that doesn't stop you from using XSL directly in Zope. On NT *twitch* with IE5 *twitch* you could make a Zope object to call Microsofts XSL processor. Then you could have a DTML page that goes over some sort of query to return an XML document linked to the XSL style sheet. It's easy to write some DTML to generate XML. There's a big piece of compliance right there. Currently, there's no XML on the intake side. I think this is a _far_ more important thing to do than spend a bunch of time writing yet another XSL parser. I would rather be able to generate that phone book file as XML and be able to upload it into Zope as intelligent-ish Zope objects (into a Tabula, as Zope Folders, or who-knows-what) and write a simple  <TR> <TD></TD><TD></TD> </TR>  DTML document rather than the complex XSL involved. Then I can add the ability for people to add new phone numbers and modify their entries in this dataset and re-export it to a new updated XML file, and use some other XSL parser to generate a printable phone book, PDF, RTF, and HTML from that. It's very very powerful, yes, but sometimes just to do a simple tabular based report in it is waaaay too much of a headache. We discussed this a long time ago here at digicool with just an XML based replacement for DTML (XSL was just barely off the drawing board at the time of these discussions). I still emphasize that it's (a) not that hard to generate complient XML using DTML (the DTML document itself doesn't have to be XML complient, just the document as rendered), and (b) importing XML should be a bigger priority. just my <CURRENCY STYLE="cents">.02</CURRENCY>.

Thawte will issue a type of certificate that can be used on any server on your domain (in addition to server certificates). Netscape accepts this type of certificate, but Microsoft Internet Explorer doesn't AFAIK. I want to develop Zope apps on my Win95 notebook computer without being connected to the Internet. When I do so, I get the following message: File "C:\Temp\Paul's Site/lib/python1.5\BaseHTTPServer.py", line 97, in server_bind hostname, hostnames, hostaddrs = socket.gethostbyaddr(host) socket.error: host not found I think that on WinNT there was some kind of loopback adapter I could install. I can't find an equivalent for Windows 95. OK, one other thing that just struck me regarding SSL issues, at least in the HTTP world... Verisign won't issue a server sert (x.509) for just "any" server, it has to be examined and approved (Apache finally got this), I believe Thawte Consulting, while more freewheeling, is also in a similar case. The reality is, you have to have a cert from someone who is pre-registered as a root server, or you're going to confuse your users.... sad but true. - Patch and some other questions

I created a unified diff patch for ZopeHTTPServer which incorporates the improved exception handling. It is diffed against 1.9.0b2. You'll need to go into the ZopeHTTPServer directory to apply it. The other thing is: Upgrading. It looks like from the install program that if you do install over the old installation that it won't nuke your Data.bbb, which is good, but raises some other questions: 1) Generally, can you merge or otherwise transfer data from Data.bbb to another? I suspect the answer is going to be something like "loop over the keys". 2) How do you safely back up the database wrt things like locking and transactions? I also suspect a similar answer to #1...
