Using FTP to connect to Zope server from (g)VIM

Hi all, My intellect was piqued recently by a discussion on the list about editors for Zope etc. I remember some people saynig that VIM was good, to which my response was, 'Yeah but there's no FTP built in'. Someone then responded with a few scripts to do it. Well I thought they were a bit cumbersome, so I wrote my own. ftpopen.py and ftpsave.py. If you have a VIM executable with Python support built in then these run from within VIM and allow you to open/save file from/to Zope seamlessly. (I have them on a menu in GVIM for instance) I'll put the files up on my Zope Members bit (http://www.zope.org/Members/philh) along with a few instructions. If anybody can think of any enhancements then please let me know and I'll see if I can work them in. I hope these will be useful to someone. See ya Phil phil.harris(a)zope.co.uk

It's very strange that one machine with IE5.0 works and one doesn't. Anyone else heard of something like this? As for the sluggishness, IE just gets fatter every time they rev it. But, so does Netscape for that matter. You probably need more RAM. *Designing* Zope sites

I've been learning about the workings of Zope: ZClasses, ZSQL methods, Python products, etc., and there are *lots* of resources about the APIs, and lots of products to add content to our sites. There is also lots of help on how to *set up* a Zope site: how to tie w/Apache, etc. What I haven't found yet, though, is much advice on how to *design* the Zope site: . effective ways to use User Folders . whether to make containing folders for like objects (eg book reviews), and collect these for lists with objectValues, or whether to add them under user folders/different contexts, and use ZCatalog searches to find them. . how to handle printable pages throughout a site . strategies for using ZSQL methods throughout a site and so on The Zope book tosses some nuggets of advice here and there, but doesn't build up a site, so we don't really get to see the workings of a talented Zope architect. Other documentation focuses on how to Do Things, like use SQL methods, or how to build products. I've had a little bit of time to look at the CMF, and that has some structure about reviewing, etc. (and seems to advocate the 'place things in user folders, use ZCatalog to find' method); however, I'm not designing something that seems so portal-ish, and this seems like a hegemonic solution to a design question. So: Am I missing any resources on fitting it all together? Are there 'example sites' that someone could describe? Would anyone with a well-designed site be willing to export it all up and post it somewhere, so we could explore it? Same problem here. But I think that the problem is elsewhere because I don't have any problem to manage my personal folder on zope.org with OmniWeb. Maybe the problem is authenticating an user when there is a port number in the URL. Or the way zope.org does the authentication is more friendly that the authentication window. I have tried to run zope on a port 80 but Python refused to bind the port and I'm sure that Apache is not running. It seems that Mac OS X protects some resources. By the way, iCab has exactly the same problem and yet, it works with the personal folder. Dominique

[Note] "absolute_url" strips any context

I just recognized (and was astonished) that "absolute_url" strips any context from the URL. Thus, e.g., if you have the following structure: / F/ D -> absolute_url en/ de/ fr/ then "GET('/en/F/D')" will return "/F/D". This is because, "absolute_url" is based on "getPhysicalPath". Probably it is this behaviour that should be indicated by the "absolute" in "absolute_url" (I never understood it so far). Nevertheless, I suggest to make this behaviour more explicit in the documentation. Dieter

CoreSessionTracking's get looped in <dtml-in> does not work?

It seems that it is impossible to use <dtml-in> loop for data gleaned from CoreSessionTracking. I use CoreSessionTracking 0.8 quite extensively, and I only now stumbled accross this. Here's an example. -- This does not work. It gives Incorrect Attribute error for "fname". <dtml-in expr="data.get('writers')"> <dtml-var write_1_row> </dtml-in> WHERE: * writers is correctly stored dictionary (?) gleaned from ":records". I can do "<dtml-in expr="data.get('writers')"><dtml-var fname></dtml-in>, so the fname is being returned correctly. * write_1_row is Script (Python) containing just "output=string.strip(context.fname+' '+context.lname)", and some import and output statements. If I request data using ZSQL instead of CoreSessionTracking, everything works fine: -- This works: <dtml-in list_article_writers(m_id=m_id) <dtml-var write_1_row> </dtml-in> WHERE: * list_article_writers is ZSQL Method with "m_id:tokens" parameter, and the following content: SELECT fname, lname FROM members WHERE ...etc. * Is it just me? -- Milos Prudek

Future watch: how will python division change affect zope?

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone here has given any (rational) thought on what python's PEP238 affects zope, zope coders and zope users. For those of you that don't know, PEP238 which is still be thought about, will change how the division operand ('/') works with integers. Currently the following is what happens in python int/int == int 2/1 == 2 3/2 == 1 3/4 == 0 under PEP238 this will change to int/int == float 2/1 == 2.0 3/2 == 1.5 3/4 == 0.75 to do integer division you would have to use a _new_ operand ('//'). Now first off, this PEP has not been accepted (although Guido is leaning towards it), and there supposedly will be 2 years of warnings before it changes. But I'm not sure how the warnings are going to appear in dtml calls or the python methods? I just checked and divmod is available so you could do <dtml-var expr="_.divmod[a,b][0]"> to get the same value as <dtml-var expr="a/b">. I'm more concerned with the python methods that are out there or will be going out there. Should we start coding defensively? FYI: DC -> ZC, plus 2.4 released

Hello everyone. As first reported by Andy "Scoop" McKay on ZopeZen, we're changing our name from Digital Creations to Zope Corporation. The name change has the fortunate side effect of letting us be referred to as ZC instead of DC, which almost sounds the same if you speak with a lisp. :^) The news is up on LWN, which links to the press release. LWN also announced the 2.4 release. Why are we doing the name change? Good question, especially since I used to make the spiel about the company name being separate from the software name. In a nutshell, it confused the mess out of everyone. Briefly stated, Zope needs to appeal better to the crowd that expects good packaging and clear brands. We've trial ballooned this with a number of you over the last couple of months and the need for this is conclusive. There's a new site at www.zope.com that reflects the change. I expected to tell the Zope list on Friday, but we're still sorting through some font issues. :^( Does this harbinger any other major changes? Not really <wink>. :^) Seriously, we're looking at a number of things to make Zope well-positioned and competitive, as well as doing the same for the things DC/ZC does. The biggest thing in the coming weeks is, by a mile, opening up the CVS. This is the beginning of a series of steps to really work together with the community and tap into the potential that's been underutilized. I'm quite happy with where the direction is going on this and the likely outcomes. We'll be at the O'Reilly conference this week, sporting new brochures and shirts. We'll be giving away some of our stockpile of deprecated Zope shirts with DC on the front, so drop by our booth and get some of these hot collectibles before they're out of issue! :^) --Paul

Great html-applet ( commecial ) to be used as a content-editing tool with Zope

I've been playing with Zope for a couple of months now, and actually creating my thesis about using intranet's to various cool things and - duh - creating intranets with Zope. What I quickly learned while working with non tech. people, Zope with MsWordMungrer, STX_Document and other great tools wasn't yet enough. Eventhough Structured text is nice and powerfull tool, it is good only for techies who are willing to really learn the rules. People who only were concerned about the content, wanted a better tool for editing information. And if possible, that tool could resemble Word. I just bougth Realobjects Edit-on-Pro (http://www.realobjects.de/english/editonpro_e.htm) and replaced all my textarea-inputfields in our intranet's pages. Wow - what a difference! If you have a budget for your project and want to take your Zope-project to the next level, check that product out.

Adding new zope products

Once I have created a Zope Product in my Control Panel and after I added a Factory inside this product, how then do i add this product within some other Zope folder in my Zope Root. i have gotten to the point of seeing this product on the product list and upon adding it Zope Prompted me for a login to which my main zope admin (main zope installation user) login did not work. Anyone know how??????? thanks, --mate'
