Hmm... 3 times in a row I've tried using composer to publish into my zope server - each time the server has locked up completely after receiving the last image on the new page. I'm using the zope standalone server under win95 osr2 and netscape communicator 4.5 on the same machine. Apart from being nervous about having to manual kill the zope server I'm left wondering how I'll manage if I'm publibshing to a remote site. Does anyone else have problems publishing in this way? It is documented in the CHANGES.txt file, and is also locatable with the Zope bugs and features collector: http://www.zope.org/Collector Basically, rather than expend more energy to fix it, we decided to focus instead on the new stand-alone server architecture, ZServer. This doesn't mean we won't accept ZopeHTTPServer patches from people, it's just that we have chosen to focus our energies elsewhere right now. Basically if you want to use PUT right now, you should use PCGI, or the version of Zope that runs as a service on win32. Of course, you can always use through the web editing. Soon, when ZServer is rolled into the main release, PUT will work with the stand-alone server, and you'll get FTP access to boot! -Amos

Hello Zope Enthusiasts, We would like to tell the world how great Zope it. We know that Zope has many technical merits, but an important part of that message is how Zope has been useful for people. To document this, we're collecting 'testimonials' and 'case studies'. We would love to hear from people who would be willing to talk about how they have used Zope. For 'testimonials' we are just looking for a positive quote about how you use/like Zope, with perhaps so technical details about what specific problems your organization solves with Zope. For 'case studies' we would like to work with you to detail your problem and how Zope helped provide you with a solution. It would be great to include URLs with testimonials, and especially case studies. Our plan is to include testimonials and case studies on the Zope site. - ZServer and RedHat

Amos, I spent a good bit of this morning playing with ZServer on my RedHat 5.2 machine. The good news is it's working and it's fast, but there are some trickies that should be noted. I edited the start.py file to use the python that came with RH. That didn't work because the default Python for RH stupidly doesn't have threads enabled. So... I edited the start.py again to use the Python that comes with the linux binary distribution of Zope, and that bombs because we don't ship the FCNTL module with our Python, which medusa uses (in medusa/asyncore.py). So... I d/led, compiled and installed my own Python (1.5.1 and overwriting the RH one). For those of you out there who want to do this but aren't down on compiling things, I used this sequence: ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-threads make make install (<- probably have to be root) ...and then re-edited the start.py file to go back to the (new) system python. Everything started up fine, but when I tried to hit the HTTP server I got an 'unhandled exception in thread' error, cPickle choked on reading the Zope database file. Brian said this is because I installed ZServer *over* an existing Zope, and that the python that comes with Zope uses a different cPickle format. The solution is either to recompile my new Python (again) with the different cPickle format enabled, or to delete my database files and let Zope make new ones, using the new format. I chose the latter. Moving 'var/Data.bbb*' into an old directory, firing up ZServer/start, and it worked! Now I'm going to play with FTP. :) Michel

No they aren't, except in the old Bobo docs. This is really unfortunate as it is a key part of the story. However, I don't really know where they should go -- it isn't part of DTML and the Zope Manager's Guide isn't really the right place. My suggestion: submit a documentation request to the Collector, which assures that we won't forget about it. --Paul

- Newbie can't "manage"

I want to use zope with MySQL. I can't get .../cgi-bin/Zope.cgi/manage to work ... the 'Temporarily Unavailable' message results with everything I've tried: From the var/pcgi.log the following (consistent) error message: Tue Jan 26 11:30:30 1999 pcgi-wrapper: Interrupted system call (102) failure during connect python in /usr/local/bin: Python 1.5.2b1 (#1, Dec 28 1998, 15:45:55) [GCC 2.8.1] on sunos5 Copyright 1991-1995 Stichting Mathematisch Centrum, Amsterdam Zope-1.9.0 untarred. Ran python w_pcgi.py without error. MySQL is installed and running. MySQL adapter compiled and the .so file moved to the Products/ZMySQLDA directory. Copied Zope.cgi to the apache share/cgi-bin directory. Apache runs as 'nobody' and the var directory has group ownership 'zope' that includes 'nobody'. (and pcgi.log file was created/written to), so I think permissions are ok. The /var/tmp directory contains no pcgi.hhmmss files. Do I have to do something besides run the w_pcgi script, such as a 'make install'? Do I have to do something to tell the system to use/make the connection to MySQL server (the database there is the initial installation...I've inserted no data/tables of my own). Or is it something else stupid that I've overlooked. If it's RTFM, a pointer to the appropriate M paragraph would be helpful. Thanks, Richard Wolff

- Forcing re-authentication

I'm having some problems in my ZPublisher application concerning authentication. In short it compiles to the following: - When a user connects to the application, an authentication is forced and the user logs in. - After a while, if the user wants to re-authenticate (in order to use a different userid), he/she has to close the browser in order to get a new login window. - ZPyGreSQLDA errors when returning no rows

As the subject says, the ZPyGreSQLDA DA throws an error when the SQL query returns no rows. Is this to be expected? Do I need to write seperate DTML methods that handle that case? I was hoping to just get no objects returned, so my #in tags would execute their #else clauses. Ross -- Ross J.
