endian issues

Hi, we're trying to move our Zope object database from a sparc machine to a pentium and we're having endian problems. Should the data file be more platform independent than it's acting, or are we SOL? You might also note that the subject of this mail is plural- does anyone have a definitive answer to the endianess vs. endianity debate that this problem has sparked in our office? That's not really list related, just wondering... Anyway, thanks for any help! tyler

Traffic has been sufficiently sparse, and the changes on zope.org (different host, new mailing list manager version, different web interface, etc) are sufficient to warrant one last test before i ignore it for the weekend. - about zope and object (product) publishing

hi all, company where i work among other thing creates web applications. we mostly program them as cgi scripts in perl, but we do not find it to be the best way. we'd rather find som product (framework), where we could do something like publishing objects. in this enviroment behaviour of object, and their displaying should be somehow independent. for example, i'd define object Guestbook, with it's behaviour. this object i'd use on different websites and for each website i'd define other way of displaying. we want this object publishing framework to be open source. we found zope and right now are evaluating it. i think it's nice and it fullfils many of our needs, but i have following problem: i define object (product) in python, together with his behaviour and default displaying. well, it appears in products list and then i can ad it to any folder. what i dont know is how to change displayng of product. all i can do is change displaying of instance of product, but thats not ok. id like to define some properties for product, that i could change in products folder and that changes would appear in all instances of product. well, i can do it by changing python code, but that's bad solution, because i want object and (other than default) displaying to be independent. would you please let me know, or point to documents, where i could find how to define product properties, that are system-wide? i'm new to zope and python and could not resolve the issue. thanks! i'd also like, if you let me know about other object publishing frameworks, that are open sourced. i was not able to find anything comparable to zope. thanks one more time, have a nice day, bye Deckard (Vladimir.Tomasovic(a)kiss.sk)

add addrs to mailhost send though Zope?

I've got a mailhost working, and using two dtml pages derived from the how-to samples, I can send a message to multiple adreses by listing them on the To: line in the dtml. How would I go about creating a form whereby a user could add his address to this list? Thanks Bill

- XML-style DTML code

Gang, In the attitude of "put your code where your mouth is," attached is a patch to DT_HTML.py in the DocumentTemplates class, which provides the ability to use XML-style formats instead of just the DTML formats... now, this isn't an earth shattering re-work, honestlyi t's a few lines of code, and it probably will have some minor impact on performance, and might even have a bug---but I've run it through the test stuff, and also played iwth it a bit behind Zope, so it shouldn't blow anything up! The new syntax is simply: <?ztml #var arg ?> Note that I've chosen ztml, for Z Template Markup Language (yeah yeah), and it's not "officially" sanctioned, but there you have it. Additionally, I've not really decided what should be done with the '#', and whether it should stay... it's a minor change (I think) to get rid of it, but you never know... I kinda like it, but I kinda don't! ;-) Also, the space at the end is option before the '?>', whereas the one after '<?ztml' is REQUIRED by the XML spec... Greetings, Please read this if you use or want to use The second pre-release of Zap is available. http://www.zope.org/Download/Prereleases/Zap/Zap-1.1.0pre2-linux2-x86.tar.g… There are two reasons for Zap: 1) To demonstrate a working copy of Zope with Apache for people to use as a model to get their own Zopes and Apaches working. This is proof-of-concept mode. 2) To provide our community with yet another way of publishing their objects. This is production-mode. Zope works with Apache. It may not be the easiest thing to set up, and there are some trickies that aren't usualy encountered with the other Zope methods, but in general, once you get the hang of setting Zope up with Apache it's pretty straightforward. Apache has many, many, many knobs on it. Out of the box Apache comes with all it's many, many, many knobs turned to 1) facilitate general filesystem and *traditional* CGI serving, and 2) be secure. Zope goes against the grain of item 1 because it's more advanced than a bunch of static HTML files and one-spawn-per-hit perl scripts. Item 2 offers a bit of dificulty because Apache comes configured to be highly-restrictive, with most opetions turned off by default. When you add new directives to Apache, you must often turn on specific functionality for that specific area. I am working on a FAQ for Zope and Apache. It is a bit bare because the most frequently asked question is "My Zope+Apache doesn't work, I get a 404! What's wrong?" This question will not go into the FAQ because it is too general; there are a whole lot of situations, many of them not related to Zope, which will cause you to get a 404. When I sent out the first pre-release I got one response, and that was from Paul. His comments reflect the second pre-release. So, from the developer to the community, I ask you to: 1) Please brainstorm up some questions; specific technical questions, (and the answer if you know it!) related to you experienced with getting Zope to work with Apache. 2) If you are are having problems with Zope and Apache, please download the pre-release, even if you don't intend to use it, just play with it, fondle it, tell me where it breaks for you, and examine it's configuration to see if it can help you with your specific problem with your Apache. Kudos go to Kevin Dangoor for his post today on getting Zope to work in .htaccess files, we didn't know that Apache would rewrite the whole environment when you use a RewriteRule in a .htaccess until Kevin butted up against it and provided us with accurate information. He has been given a patch which fixes his problem and will be availble in the next release. Remember, Zope is Open Source because we want your involvement, we thing your smarter than Microsoft does, we need your contributions, we are junkies for a bug fix, we're old levis looking for a patch, it's a community effort! Sorry. The sanity checker was written for Bobo and hasn't been updated to reflect the Zope publisher. You can ignore that particular error until I post a patch to work with both Bobo and Zope. Greetings, You have probably noted some quietness from the DC front. That's cuz we're all going nuts getting ready for The-Big-Move to our new office this weekend. Preventive measures from something like, say, The-Big-Move causing us to loose connectivity; we have been uploading everything to our new server on codeit. Yesterday we moved the list, the fact that your all getting this means it works. Just now we moved the website. www.digicool.com now goes to wherever codeit is located. A side effect of this move is that we (well, actually Ken) have activated the Mailman web interface. It is at: http://www.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope You can use your email and password to log in and change your mailman settings. This is what we in these here parts call a-good-thing.
