Tabula / Z Tables question

hello all, many of our customers use microsoft access to store all their relevant company data. it seems tabula is what we need in order for our customers to publish their access based product directories. hopefully somebody at digital creations can answer these questions. i read on this list that tabula would be integrated into zope anybody know the time frame? will Z table be a subset of tabula (i.e. not offer the same features)? our designers need to be able to predefine layouts (create templates) with the data originating from an access file. ideally the customer would just drop in a new access database file whenever his prices or products change without affecting the rest of the website. any foreseeable problems here (i read that when you delete a tabula object it erases everything related to it)? our zope system would most likely be an intel linux based machine tied to sybase. is tabula availible for linux? regards, webman --------------------------------------------------------------------------- webman | _ beehive GmbH | ASCII ribbon campaign ( ) berlin, Germany | - against HTML email X http://www.beehive.de | & vcards / \

FYI: Bug in object caching

FYI...Jim found a bug in the object caching code that basically made it not deactivate things. I believe Scott Robertson reported that he saw no effect from the cache removing things, so this should address that. I believe it is going into 1.10. --Paul

WinNT & time zone woes

Hi there - I and a colleague have been working with Zope on WinNT with MySQL/ODBC as the database, with generally very good success. Zope is awesome! However, in one particular situation we noted the following strange behavior - MySQL select queries were mysteriously failing with a parse error in RDB.py, related to not being able to parse a DATETIME field. After looking at DateTime.py and concluding that DateTime should be able to parse virtually anything ;-), we were initially very puzzled as to the cause of the parse error. However, after eliminating everything else we could think of, we finally found that it was the fact that NT was returning the value 'Tokyo Standard Time' as the timezone for our machine - a value which is not listed in the _zmap in DateTime - so, DateTime was failing here: # Current time, exp in specified timezone t,tz=time(),self._tzinfo._zmap[lower(arg)] We added the mapping 'tokyo standard time':'Tokyo' to _zmap, restarted Zope, and now everything's working fine. However, when I looked into implementing the same fix on my Japanese NT Server machine, I found that python's time.tzname gives me back 'PST' even though my machine is set for Japan's time zone :-( . A suggestion: Would it be better to get the numerical time zone via time.timezone and then convert it to some set string for each time zone, rather than rely on time.tzname? Incidently, with the Solaris installation of Zope I have, Japan's time zone is given as 'JST', which would also require an entry in DateTime to avoid an error similar to the above. _zmap is useful for parsing date strings, but should it be used to determine the time zone when a more sure method is available? Thoughts, anyone? --Brian

Question on Performance

I have come to two performance question on the Zope(may be). 1. Which is better, a faster processor or larger ram, to get quicker response? 2. Which is quicker, depending strictly on DTML or using an External Method, to pit out selected static contents from about 200 DTML document. uhhh, well, I heared that performance issue and benchmarking are dependent on so many circumstance and too complex a witchcraft that I can not understand. So what I want is a general rule for a dummy. I have come to the above questions, when I uploaded 277 static documents which is spitted by a DTML Document. That DTML Document compares the request with the id's of the 277 files and select some of them to spit out. Not so clever to write down an elegant DTML codes, I wrote down an External method and found that the External Method response quicker then my simple minded DTML codes(the E-method and the DTML documents are called by another DTML document). Still the quicker response is desired. My Zope is running behind Apache through pcgi on a linux box with 28MBytes RAM and 133 MHz Pentium(actually this box runs 3 instance of Zope + apache and usually a dummy(more dummer than me) is using Netscape). splitting the mailing list?

As a newcomer to this list, I am finding myself overloaded by the level of traffic (>50 messages/day it seems), and wonder if there are one or more natural split points for the mailing list. PostGreSQL has about 6-8 mailing lists (see www.postgresql.com) and that seems to work well... The thought of "live with the traffic or go away" just seems so punitive :) ... it's hard to decide what I need to read - what applies to me - so I'm left to choose between reading more than I can really afford to and not reading enough and being way in the dark. Could the list be divided along lines of - functionality? - type of work being done? - background or Zope skill level of individuals? I'd personally love a mailing list that was for web server "lightweights" using Zope, Apache, and Linux. If there was some way to divide up the discussions, it would really help me and others coming into the fray. The traffic is only going to get heavier as more folks start using Zope. Studying it's httpd.conf file should shed some light on your situation. manage - authentication - setup problem

I'm doing the big switch (well, hopefully not too big) from Bobo over to the full Zope env, and have gotten snagged on getting authenticated. I'm using Apache 1.3.2 on RH Linux 5.1, and Zope 1.9.0 ... I have tried adding the Apache trick to the conf file -- the documentation doesn't say which conf file and I am an apache web server novice, so I tried putting the new lines at the bottom of each of them, one at a time, but didn't get it working. Which conf file should I modify? What else can I try? The apache error log only shows repeated: [Sun Feb 21 10:56:29 1999] [notice] httpd: caught SIGTERM, shutting down [Sun Feb 21 10:56:29 1999] [notice] Apache/1.3.2 (Unix) (Red Hat/Linux) configured -- resuming normal operations from "httpd restart" commands.
