Using FTP to connect to Zope server from (g)VIM

Hi all, My intellect was piqued recently by a discussion on the list about editors for Zope etc. I remember some people saynig that VIM was good, to which my response was, 'Yeah but there's no FTP built in'. Someone then responded with a few scripts to do it. Well I thought they were a bit cumbersome, so I wrote my own. ftpopen.py and ftpsave.py. If you have a VIM executable with Python support built in then these run from within VIM and allow you to open/save file from/to Zope seamlessly. (I have them on a menu in GVIM for instance) I'll put the files up on my Zope Members bit (http://www.zope.org/Members/philh) along with a few instructions. If anybody can think of any enhancements then please let me know and I'll see if I can work them in. I hope these will be useful to someone. See ya Phil phil.harris(a)zope.co.uk

Silly send mail problem

Hi all, I had a sendmail problem, whenever I send out a mail from zope, it always contain an empty "To" ,"From" and "Subject", but I was able to get the body of the mail, anyone got this problem before ?? I'm using Zope 2.1.6 on NT and the mail server is from Lotus, and the form processor syntax as below : <dtml-sendmail smtphost="mail.xyz.com" mailto="wai(a)xyz.com" mailfrom="wai(a)xyz.com" Subject="Testing from my machine"> mail body </dtml-sendmail> Thanks. MacOS X Server + Python 1.5.2 + Zope 2.2.2

I currently have Zope and Python installed from the source code from the excellent instructions by JShell. But there is one little problem....CPU Utilization shoots above 97% as soon as I access the management screen. If anybody has any ideas or solutions. Does 2.2.4 solve Proxy+ZCatalog bugs?

The question as in the title. In changes for 2.2.3 I found: - Resolved known condition in the Catalog where objects are not guaranteed to be unindexed before indexing happens again. Now objects are guaranteed to be unindexed correctly first. This should resolve all outstanding KeyErrors with Catalog, although currently broken Catalogs will require a reindex to resolve them. Has anyone verified whether this in fact corrects the infamous ZCatalog key errors when one tried to reindex site proxied with Apache? Besides, it's again easy to work around by keeping CVS-ish stuff on the filesystem either by putting them in python products or HTMLFiles. There's even ZCVSMixing should you really be pedantic. The test suite stuff is true for any web application, as has been discussed on the XP lists (so I'm told ;-) That said, there's ZUnit and PyUnit now, so I'm not sure that his opinion on this is valid at all. His comments about DTML are all valid, but it's a choice he'd made to write logic in DTML and he's a fool for doing so. IMNSHO, all 'logic' should be kept in python and you should never need to use the "" in a DTML tag. If you do, you're doing too much in DTML. Put it in a product or one of Evan's new-fangled python methods (although these aren't CVS'able, so I'd advise against it, unless is 'python scripting') If used this way, DTML actually provides quite a nice scripting layer for people who only understand/care about HTML, and there's the promise of XHTML for the future. He sees DTML's 'dynamic scoping' as a hinderance, it's actually one of its strengths. Yes, it can be confusing, but maybe you should just write code which doesn't make assumptions about variables, or handles the cases when they're not there. The same is true of acquisition and the namespaces concepts, maybe with better documentation, people like him wouldn't have such problems. Zope's built in FTP server is one of it's huge stengths, IMO. He hasn't realised this and so bitches about it. You can always turn it off you know! Likewise the HTTP server, run Zope as a CGI if you must! :P Oh yeah, TTW editing does _not_ mean code has to live in the ODB as I've already mentioned. Of course, in being behind Quixote, this guy has an alternative motive for slagging off Zope, but I do wish he wouldn't. In (almost) his own words, he just wants a filesystem of python scripts to build his website. Fine, but that doesn't solve a lot of people's problems and has a lot of limitations, hence Zope came into being. Yes, it's a complex beast but, if handled correctly, it'll save you loads of development time and leaves you with a graceful, quick application that is seperately configurable and scriptable, and has a _lot_ of code re-use. I'm pretty sure this is true for the vast majority of web applications but, of course, there are exceptions, although I'm not sure MEMS Exchange is one of them ;-) The one problem with Zope that he _should_ have mentioned is this: You have to try pretty hard to write nasty code in Python, which si why it's so great. Conversely, it's quite easy to build 'nasty' applications in Zope that are messy and hard to maintain. Such is life, that's a possibility I'm willing to live with for the power that Zope gives me. cheers, Chris

Factoids for supporting zope

I am going through a justification (risks) of the use of Zope for a corporate client. Framing things as an Open Source play relies on the health of its community for its longevity and access to expertise for support. I remember some number tossed out when the Members folder at zope.org went to Btree. What is the current # of Members? Is this an estimate of the Zope community? I think there is probably some dead wood in that # but at least its an estimate. I remember it being over 10K. Our client thought that the recent VC money was about 1/2 what would be needed to make it fly. My argument is that money is leveraged by the active Zope community so a crux in my logic is how strong this community is. Other support? Regards, Albert Boulanger aboulanger(a)vpatch.com

getattr in Python Method problem

In the folder where dosomething_pym (Python Method) is located, is also a string property set called 'en' with the value 'English' The Python Method object is called with no parameters, but is defined with the 'self' parameter inside the Python Method object. In a DTML Method this works fine: <dtml-var "_.getitem('en')"> and returns "English" This is what I try in the Python Method: lang=getattr(self,'en') but this raises an error! Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: validate I have searched the mailing list but in vain. Some people say it should be lang=getattr(self,'en')(self,REQUEST) But that raises the same error.
