It is a standard error made over and over again: DTML objects are called with two positional parameters called "client" and "REQUEST". When you let DTML call the object, then it calls it with "_.None" and "_" as parameters. The "_" propagates the namesspace. When you call the object explicitly (as you do) and do not pass the namespace, a DTML Method starts with an empty namespace and any access to a Zope object will give you a KeyError. I recently learned GIMP (URL:http://www.gimp.org) It was very nice to see, how script interfaces were build from a very compact and easy parameter description. Should not be too difficult to build. However, I doubt very much, that many Zope users (!) will be satisfied with such interfaces. While the GIMP interfaces are for developers (and therefore, there is not need for Corporate Identity or extensive design) many Zope interfaces are for consumers. Such interfaces will need much more noise (in form of colors, logos, CI, SchnickSchnack,...) and will suffer from a restriction to the bare functionality. Dieter

Too early initialization of property sheets?

Under Zope 2.3.0, with ZClasses I'm defining within Zope: I have a method defined in a base class to loop through all property sheets in the newly-created object and capture properties which are stored in the REQUEST object. I invoke it during the manage_add<product> method for inheriting classes. An example: --- # Defined on behalf of class Foo def manage_addFoo(id, title=""): foo = context.Foo.createInObjectManager(id, context.REQUEST) foo.private_init_defaults() foo.request_set_properties(context.REQUEST) --- # Defined in inherited class VirtualFoo def request_set_properties(REQUEST): sheets = container.propertysheets for sheet in sheets.values(): for prop in sheet.propertyIds(): if REQUEST.has_key(prop): sheet.manage_changeProperties({prop:REQUEST[prop]}) --- Unfortunately, the sheets at this point in time seem to be immutable. I get errors which look as if property_extensible_schema__() is returning 0. The properties can be modified through the administrative interface after initialization, so I'm confident that I'm not somehow accidentally inheriting FixedSchema. In an earlier version of this product I invoked foo.propertysheets.default.manage_editProperties(context.REQUEST) at the same point in manage_addFoo, but in this case I want to make certain that all inherited property sheets are handled in an automated fashion. Actually, ASP uses server-side JavaScript and VBScript. That is probably where he is refering to. IMO, zope needs more clean up before it gets more features. I have to agree that adding internal support for more languages beside perl and python would dilute the common effort that brings us forward. What would be really useful , though , would be for someone knowledgeable to write a howto on how to connect to php from external methods. That way one could use the business logic from PHP-scripts (one might have something lying around) and leverage them through the Zope framework. indirect calling of methods with parameters

Sorry, but this is above me head! I'm trying to call a method that needs parameters indirectly. Well, after reading some docs i believe to somehow understand how indirect calling of variables works. What's more, everything is fine when no parameters are involved: <dtml-let method="SomeMethod"> <dtml-var method> </dtml-let> <dtml-let method="'SomeMethod'"> <dtml-var "_[methode]"> </dtml-let> Both Variants call SomeMethod, which is fine! On the other hand i'm totally lost when parameters are involved. I for example tried to build my commandcall as a string. But using _[] won't work as it naturally won't call the method but look for an object with a kind of unusal name, which doesn't exist. It seems like i need some kind of eval construct. Any suggestions? Hello, Being new to zope, I hope this is relevant. I just putted together an article about the way I see future Zope products. It is available at : http://123piano.com/en/webdesign/zope-products/default.htm A little extract : "What seems to be a pain when creating a product is the fact that you need to provide your own User Interface. Why do I need to create a specific UI to let the user update the title of my product? And if I want to have my user edit the title trough ftp? Webdav? Do I have to take care of this as well? Mike, Thank you. Yes, it most certainly is worth reading, and I appreciate your help. Is this really what everyone does? I was planning on trying to do something like this if I couldn't find a format that displays the dates or hours sans leading zeros the way I need them. So how do people do this? I use dates and times a lot, in all sorts of ways, and this represents a lot of extra typing.. So, my first thought is to attempt to build a method for time-string processing. Has anyone done this already? I'm relatively new to Zope and given my relative inexperience and fairly substantial workload I'd hate to reinvent the wheel if it wasn't necessary...
