Zope based Authentication. Why Why Why

Hi all, Going thru the archives of this mail list, I can't help but notice the following 1) There are many zoper who need to use a login form to authenticate users 2) Most do not like http authentication 3) ZPatterns and LoginManager are good solutions, but are not appropiate for new users (compilation required, usersourse required ... &&&& poor documentation. Why can't Zope's default authenication be form based? (cookie based, ZODB based ...) Why do we have to start with HTTP authentication? (can't logout, hard to manipulate) Why does everybody think ZPatterns/LoginManager is always the answer. (simple problem, Tough solution, overkill) Can somebody post a good form based authenication system without using ZPatterns/LoginManager. Mohan.

Yes I confirm I've seen some problems with commited versions not unlocking modified objects, but I think that was fixed. The problem I still see in versions is that when you in a folder create one object, nobody else working out of the version are able to create objects in that folder because the version has locked the folder. But this are small problems if you use versions with caution they are really one of zope's great features. Chris I believe you want ... (setq make-backup-files nil) in your .emacs file will sort out your backup file problem. My zope directory is still littered with the little '~' versions so worthwhile sharing this here. As for ftp - I seem to recall using passive mode with the xemacs ftp client under windows (well hey - it's still emacs and it's still under windows :-) ) ... (custom-set-variables '(efs-use-passive-mode t)) with a bit of judicious editing you can have an .emacs file that works with both emacs and xemacs. Can't help with the ftp client by the way ... Bothered by batches

I've recently begun trying to figure out how batches work, but what appears simple is instead causing massive problems, and I really don't know what's wrong. This app is basically a job board, and is meant to iterate through a list of jobs and extract batches. Until recently I had never tested the batch functionality, but yesterday I added 6 jobs to the board and, despite having set the batchsize to 5, all 6 showed. Dropping the batchsize to 4 has the same effect, but 3 or lower works as expected; I'll see 3 items, 2, etc. Maybe I don't understand how size= works? Also, the BatchAdjustForm simply doesn't work. I consulted the batch example in the Zope Book, and borrowed quite a bit from it, but nothing seems to work. As you can probably see, I tried to simplify the 'next' navigation link to print 'It worked!' and avoid using the code I used for the 'previous' link, but this doesn't seem to ever appear, despite the fact that I'm only displaying a few of the 6 jobs currently in my sample database. Any ideas? This isn't a major problem, but it's one of the last which I'm experiencing with this project and it really annoys me that I can't even get a simple batch query to work. :)

I'm still having tons of trouble getting away from the procedural aspects of html/php/general programming when dealing with Zope. It has procedural elements, but so much of Zope is Object Oriented...besides, when dealing with the issue here at hand, you would think it would "easy" to make a simple change like this. With standard html, you can. Maybe because html and such isn't an environment, whereas, that's exactly what Zope is. I would expect changing index_html to be the equivalent of moving a piece of paper, rather than moving a chair, or a couch.
