Using FTP to connect to Zope server from (g)VIM

Hi all, My intellect was piqued recently by a discussion on the list about editors for Zope etc. I remember some people saynig that VIM was good, to which my response was, 'Yeah but there's no FTP built in'. Someone then responded with a few scripts to do it. Well I thought they were a bit cumbersome, so I wrote my own. ftpopen.py and ftpsave.py. If you have a VIM executable with Python support built in then these run from within VIM and allow you to open/save file from/to Zope seamlessly. (I have them on a menu in GVIM for instance) I'll put the files up on my Zope Members bit (http://www.zope.org/Members/philh) along with a few instructions. If anybody can think of any enhancements then please let me know and I'll see if I can work them in. I hope these will be useful to someone. See ya Phil phil.harris(a)zope.co.uk

It's very strange that one machine with IE5.0 works and one doesn't. Anyone else heard of something like this? As for the sluggishness, IE just gets fatter every time they rev it. But, so does Netscape for that matter. You probably need more RAM. External Method: Render STX with images

Hi! I'm putting this on the list because I've seen a couple of posts of other people who wanted to have images in their stx documents. I've just uploaded a python solution you can use as a simple way to provide this feature: http://www.zope.org/Members/Barabbas/stx_to_html You will only have to change your <dtml-var my_stx_input fmt=structured-text> to <dtml-var "stx_to_html(my_stx_input)"> to use the extended rendering with images. *Designing* Zope sites

I've been learning about the workings of Zope: ZClasses, ZSQL methods, Python products, etc., and there are *lots* of resources about the APIs, and lots of products to add content to our sites. There is also lots of help on how to *set up* a Zope site: how to tie w/Apache, etc. What I haven't found yet, though, is much advice on how to *design* the Zope site: . effective ways to use User Folders . whether to make containing folders for like objects (eg book reviews), and collect these for lists with objectValues, or whether to add them under user folders/different contexts, and use ZCatalog searches to find them. . how to handle printable pages throughout a site . strategies for using ZSQL methods throughout a site and so on The Zope book tosses some nuggets of advice here and there, but doesn't build up a site, so we don't really get to see the workings of a talented Zope architect. Other documentation focuses on how to Do Things, like use SQL methods, or how to build products. I've had a little bit of time to look at the CMF, and that has some structure about reviewing, etc. (and seems to advocate the 'place things in user folders, use ZCatalog to find' method); however, I'm not designing something that seems so portal-ish, and this seems like a hegemonic solution to a design question. So: Am I missing any resources on fitting it all together? Are there 'example sites' that someone could describe? Would anyone with a well-designed site be willing to export it all up and post it somewhere, so we could explore it? ANNOUNCE: Photo Product Update

Hi all, After much discussion on images in Zope, I've just released a new version of Photo at http://www.zope.org/Members/rbickers/Photo/. Photo now has support for ExtFile/Image so that rendered display sizes can be stored in the file system. This keeps ZODB bloat to a minimum (for those who care about that) and provides the possibility for serving the images outside of Zope (eg, via Apache). Also, you now have the option to use ImageMagick or PIL for resizing images. ImageMagick is slower (much slower in my tests), but produces better results. See http://www.bickersfamily.org/Photos/PILvsIM/ for a couple examples. This is still a development version, but it works for me. If you used Photo 0.8.0, see UPGRADE.txt for important info. Same problem here. But I think that the problem is elsewhere because I don't have any problem to manage my personal folder on zope.org with OmniWeb. Maybe the problem is authenticating an user when there is a port number in the URL. Or the way zope.org does the authentication is more friendly that the authentication window. I have tried to run zope on a port 80 but Python refused to bind the port and I'm sure that Apache is not running. It seems that Mac OS X protects some resources. By the way, iCab has exactly the same problem and yet, it works with the personal folder. Dominique

is zope a solution?

Hi, I've recently discovered zope and have the feeling that it may be the solution to a pending application issue. However, I've worked through the tutorial and I guess I'm no wiser than before, and it didn't really convince me either way; possibly leading me to believe it's aimed at small site solutions. Anyway, I have a project that will need to allow around 10,000 users (or less) to access at least a million documents. Each user is grouped into one of a small handful of access levels (determined by cookies). The documents are pre-existing PDFs, spreadsheet et al. I.e. they're all static. A solution along the lines of a standard cgi based bespoke application isn't particularly taxing from a programming point of view, but clearly wouldn't offer what I believe to be the potential of zope with it's prebuilt goodies. So, I'm wondering whether zope is up to the task (reliability and scalability), or whether I'm misunderstanding something. Any observations would be most welcome. Thanks, Tony

Sounds like you need something to distribute and/or balance the load; 3 suggestions: 1 - HTTP Proxy Load Distribution - Squid does this, round-robin, put squid in front of your ZEO farm (this is what I do). I don't think that mod_proxy is capable of doing this. 2 - Layer 4 switch (Cisco LocalDirector, Intel Netstructure, etc) - not cheap, but offers some features like a choice between true balancing, outage detection, and funky routing techniques like out-of-path return for quicker network performance. 3 - LVS - Linux Virtual Server Project, attempts to do in software what # 2 does. Personally, I'm in favor of squid because it is cheap and easy, if all your machines are of equal weight in performance terms. My company uses squid in front of multiple ZEO clients, bypassing Apache altogether for access to Zope; we use pyredir as a redirector to rewrite URLs like you would with mod_rewrite; Squid is very nice as a Zope virtual host front-end, and provides ACLs for security purposes, like blocking out the ZMI from public access. Getting load balancing working in squid is simply a matter of compiling it with a flag to specify you want external DNS resolution support and using squid's built-in name resolving program dnsserver, which will look at /etc/hosts and round-robin among multiple IPs that have the same hostname. One caveat: if you put Squid (or any high-volume TCP app) on Solaris, make sure to tune your TCP connection buffers, so Solaris doesn't choke; this is one (albeit trivial) reason we use Linux 2.4 for our proxies instead of Solaris. Since squid round-robin's it doesn't deal with node reliability problems, which means you will have to rely upon another HA mechanism on the ZEO client nodes themselves, like heartbeat from the Linux-HA project, which at some point will ported to Solaris, from what I hear. If you have a decent budget, but not a lot of time, look at a L4 switch (we use for another application, and like, the Intel Netstrcuture 7140); otherwise, if you have budget constraints consider LVS or Squid, with Squid being the likely easiest path in terms of setup time. Since barcodes are always unique numbers, you are likely to find that you would have good luck using keyboard-based barcode readers and a simple web form. In Zope, you could set up a BTree Folder that contained all your book records as some sort of object; the object id for your books would be the barcode, and you could use ZCatalog to catalog all the info, and enable barcode searches very easily. I imagine you could do this in ZClasses if you wanted a quick and easily solution, and you wouldn't have to mess with using a relational database; the upside to this setup is that all your data would be web-maintainable... Also, I think someone hacked some code to decrypt those lame CueCat barcode scanners to work in Zope; the encrypted text would be input into a text area, and when submitted, they would return the correct barcode...
