magic behavior of DateIndex in a ZCatalog

Hi there, I am developing a Zope Product in Python where I store my content objects in the ZODB. Furthermore, they are cataloged in a ZCatalog. The content objects have an attribute "creationdate" so I decided to add a DateIndex and a metadata column, both named "creationdate" in the ZCatalog. When I create a content object I was confused about the values the ZCatalog stores for the Index and for the metatype because the values differ from each other. I tried to pass different TimeStamps when a create a content object. Here is what I found out: Python TimeStamp : time.asctime() DateIndex value : 1073242818 Metadata value : Thu Jun 05 12:18:58 2003 Python TimeStamp : time.gmtime() DateIndex value : '' Metadata value : (2003, 6, 5, 10, 20, 6, 3, 156, 0) Python TimeStamp : time.localtime() DateIndex value : '' Metadata value : (2003, 6, 5, 12, 11, 13, 3, 156, 1) Python TimeStamp : time.time() DateIndex value : 1073242687 Metadata value : 1054807644.02 Python TimeStamp : DateTime.DateTime() DateIndex value : 1073242822 Metadata value : 2003/06/05 12:22:36.673 GMT+2 This shows the different values stored for the DateIndex and the Metadata column in the ZCatalog. I thought, these magic "1073242..." values stored for the DateIndex "creationdate" have something to do with the float value since the epoch (1970/01/01) which can be returned by time.time(). But the value of the DateIndex (1073242687) differs so much from the value of the metadata (1054807644.02). When I used time.time() one time it stored "1054807644.02" for the DateIndex, but this happened only once ! So, here are my questions: - Why does the DateIndex value differs so much from the metadata value ? - How can I search for content objects that are created at 2003/06/05 for instance ? - Which TimeStamp should I use when I create a content object ? Squishdot and Zope 2.6.1

I'm using zope-2.6.1 and installed the latest version of Squishdot. Every time I try to post to a plain vanilla version of the Squishdot site I get an "Unauthorized" error. I was also prompted for a password when I would try to access the addPostingForm. I tried to alleviate it by setting the proxy to Anonymous, but it didn't work, so instead I removed the "suggest_author" and "suggest_email" code. TTW Edit Lost when there is a syntax error

This happens to me and my co-developer a lot. We make a bunch of changes to a file using Zope's TTW editor and go to save it, but there are syntax errors, and we lose the edits. Is there a patch to prevent this from happening? (And, if not, why not? Is there some hidden gotcha that prevents it?)

Extending the catalog, LazyMaps and non-persistent classes ...

Hello, I have a bit of a hairy requirement: I need to extend the catalog to find content that exists outside of Zope (more or less, hard to explain without getting into details). The idea is that everytime a site search is executed, at the same time a web-service type call should be made to a seperate server, which also returns a lists of results (XML encoded). I would like to be able to "amalgamate" both into a single list of search results. So, what I thought is, I could hack the underlying catalog code (the search() method of Catalog.py) to add some functionality that would execute the search, take the XML results, parse it, and append the results to the LazyMap instance. I would now have a single list of search results for both types of searches. Also, I'm pretty sure this can be achieved through a monkey patch, so it's fairly portable and separate from the Zope core. (Though admitedly I'm not sure I understand the LazyMap/LazyCat thing too well just yet). Now when all this is done, I need to make sure that getObject() can work on those custom results, and that proper attributes/methods are in place (at a minimum to do what I need, which is just 2 or 3 calls), which brings me to the second part of the question: non-persistent classes. I need to have instances of a class that aren't stored or permanent, they exist only if getObject() is called (Which it is,though I wonder if I could get rid of that). Exactly how do I do such a thing? I'm not even sure! I've allways created my product classes by inhertiting from other classes! I'm pretty sure that's not what I want to do here, first of all because this class would be fairly unique, and because I'm pretty sure if I did (from, say CMF Document), it would inherit it's persistent properties. Does anyone have an example of such a class ? I've seen references to a "Base" or "SimpleItem" class, but I'm not clear on these, so I'd rather get an informmaed opinion on this. Oh, and BTW, some of you are probably wondering why not index the results in the catalog ... Well, I suppose I could ... One problem is there are LOTS of items to index, it would grow the catalog quite large and slow it down ... the web service comes out of a fairly optimized oracle, MUCH faster. Though I may try this if I can't accomplish the first part of the work. Either way, I'll need these non-persistent classes. Oh, and Deiter, thanks for the thing on ZPT's equivalent to HTML(), I'll be testing it out soon :) Any help, tips, commments, or alternative suggestions would be MUCH appreciated ... I read the following about pinging to weblogs.com, and want to ask, if anybody knows, if this is possible in Plone, and if yes, how (found on http://www.usrbingeek.com/) "Like most busy people that follow the blogging community I only have time to frequent blogs that I know have new content. I have my blogrolls set to mark all recently updated blogs with an asterisk. Sites that are not marked as new will hardly ever get revisited. Most habitual bloggers and blog readers do the same thing. If your site doesn't get marked as new then your blog doesn't get the traffic it deserves! To have your blog marked as new you must be pinging Weblogs.Com. Most blogging software has this feature built right in so just check the documentation or the Help file for instructions on how you can enable it. (Even w.Bloggar has the ability!)"

Hi Simon, I had a similar problem when compiling Zope (version 2.4.x) on a Sun Solaris operating system. I needed to compile zope because I wanted Zope to use a previously installed python, with which I could compile a db-connector for zope. Because there was allso a compiled version available I was able to trick my zope compilation. This was the trick: I copied the Splitter '.c' file for backup. Then I emptied the one in the zope source completely. The I started compiling zope. The compilation succeeded with no problems. But the resulting Splitter .so file was not correct or created (I forgot the exact result). After that I replaced the Splitter .so file from my own compilation with the one that was in the compiled version for my OS and everything worked fine. The problem seemed to be an error in the Splitter '.c' file with a particular distribution on a particular OS. With Zope 2.5.1 I didn't have this problem anymore. I hope this workaround is works for you too! Hi, it seems to me that the problem is with the pdf-files. When saving the 2000 and 1999 pdf-files on local disk and opening with a normal text editor I noticed that the format of both files is very different. Try creating a new pdf-file of the 1999 file with the same settings as the 2000 one and upload that again. The files both open correctly when opened on my harddisk, but then I don't use the browser plugin, but the standalone version of acrobat. When creating a pdf-file with a wizard be sure to save for the screen, not print. Perhaps the chosen resolution can be the problem... I'm not an expert on pdf, but seen some odd things happen when creating the wrong types for the use on a webpage... Good luck! could not install ParsedXML-1.3.1tgz

Hi: I could not start ParsedXML. I had installed Zope 2.6.1, the most recent stable release of Zope on solaris 8. Everything seems to work fine. then I unpacked ParsedXML-s1.3.1.tgz under installationDir/lib/python/Products. now, I could not start the server properly. I got the following error message. I followed the instructions of installing parsedXML from the download page. Please help. Thanks a lot. How to replace the Zope Error screen with different page

Hello, I have a website running apache with zope on it. When a user gets an error on a page, I want it to display a general error page instead of the Zope debugging "Zope Error - Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource" page. How do I go about doing this? TIA, Daniel
