Hi all - sorry for the wide cross-posting, but I want to be sure that the word gets out. Starting today, we will be starting the transition of zope.org to a new look and a new platform. We plan to do the final content migration later today, so if you are a frequent content contributor to zope.org, you may want to hold off on new additions until the new site goes live (expected to be Friday). Performance requirements and ZEO

I'm working on a project to build a public website using Zope, and am in a position where I need to spec and order the hardware before beginning the work on the site. We're going to plan for 500,000 hits/day as a benchmark. I'm leaning towards a ZEO configuration, with a dedicated ZEO Storage Server and 2 ZEO Client machines, with a load-balancer up front. This way, the worst case is the performance isn't up to par, and I can just toss another machine at it as a ZEO Client. Here's the question: is there any benefit to having dual-processor machines on any of these? I think we can afford 3 of them, if necessary, but is it even needed? I was planning on going with Dual-Xeon 2.8 GHz boxes running Linux. I'd rather not run more than one instance of Zope on the clients, btw. Also, I'm having trouble finding info on getting SSL working in a ZEO setup. Are there any docs out there I should read? much thanks, bart

More verbose undo/transaction desciptions

Is it possible to make the Undo tab's list of transactions more verbose? Say that I change the value of one property of an object, and then at a later time change another property of the same object. In the object's Undo tab, there's only displayed, that I called the "editTheObject-something" method twice, not which properties that were changed. Is it something that I tweak in my product's code? - Carsten

Woha, that's news to me ! Thanks ! Seems to be the most straight forward way to work arond this is to use -i option ... Though I suspect the 2.4 kernel, and maybe 2.6, might have ways to bind to specific CPU's ... Something to keep in mind anyways. I'm curious, why pystones / 50 ? My machine is a 4 CPU, do I still use 50 ? Also, my pystones/50 is 156, which, from reading what i could find on the topic, is low (Default Zope is 500, Plone talks about 750). Mind you the server as a whole isn't very busy (Linux's procinfo says 85% idle!) Is this right ? Also, should pystones be run on an idle system ? Does it matter ? Thanks to this, I've now discovered the -O option, which I've already put into use, we'll see if that improves things. Thanks again for the eye opener ... Bart, The machine you have listed below would EASILY handle 1,000,000 hits a day. If you are worried about it, try some benchmarks using Apache Bench (ab). Here are some VERY old ones I did.. http://www.zope.org/Members/BwanaZulia/benchmarks.html Basically, your machine should easily be able to handle 50-100 requests per second and there are a ton of things you can do to offload the work from Zope if you are looking for raw speed... - Have images/files served up by Apache (lets Zope do what it does best) - Use Zope internal RAM Cache on things that are highly dynamic - Use a proxy server (like Squid) for offsite caching Good luck. editing docs via ftp (emacs)

Hi all, I am new to Zope and would like to edit my DTML and Python using emacs. I have figured out how to FTP the document to the Zope server (this is documented in several places: you visit file /user@host#port/...), but what I can't figure out is how to create different "types" of files and objects. For example, if I create a "page template" or "dtml method" in the Zope web interface, and then edit and save the file in emacs (through FTP) it changes the file to a DTML Document. Basically everything I touch with Emacs/FTP becomes a DTML document. The "Zope Book" online talks about FTPing to the url of your template + "/source.html", but that has not worked -- I get FTP errors that the template file is not a directory. Any pointers? strange unicode behaviour

I have spent the last 30 minutes going crazy with this: in dtml: <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8"> </head> <dtml-call "getText()")> </html> in python: def getText(): s=u'a string with some accented chars' s=s.encode('utf-8') return s the above works fine, but return s.lower() does not !!! (the accented chars are badly rendered in the browser). Can someone, please, explain this to me?? I am on zope 2.6.1 (installed from binaries under win), >From the python console everithing is OK, so there should be something with Zope. I have utf-8 as sys.defaultencoding and I do not load any locale when starting Zope. Thanks for any help, --peppo

Configuration of Apache and PCGI
