Copying Zope @ Zope.org since this is useful information. My numbers below are approximations, not hard figures. Its derived from experimental observation. A python bytecode, on average, executes about 50 machine instructions. You probably want to let a whole CPU quanta expire before voluntarily switching threads. Generally a CPU quanta will be about 5 milliseconds. A 1GHz pentium will execute about 1,000,000 instructions / millisecond, or about 100,000 python bytecodes / quanta. The typical Zope publishing path is about 1,000,000 bytecodes or more -- so letting that path be interrupted 10 times or more is overkill (for Zope). Using my numbers you could argue for a much higher ratio. (Ie, if you believe me, Zope "wants" a sys.setcheckinterval(100000) on a 1Ghz machine. From experimental observation I have detected a levelling off in benefit at about pystones/50. This becomes very noticable on a multiprocessor machine. I believe the levelling off effect comes from other normal 'blocking' operations inside Zope which cause one thread to suspend. Hence the factor of 500 discrepancy :) The rationale is due to overhead in thread switching, and "thruput" optimization. Consider the following example: Two threads wish to count from 1 to 10. After each thread counts a single digit, they switch. A system clock is incremented after each count: Sys Thr1 Thr2 1 1 2 1 3 2 4 2 ... 19 10 20 10 The average time for each thread to complete is 19 + 20 / 2, or 19.5. Now consider the example where thread 1 is allowed to run to completion before thread 2: Sys Thr1 Th2 1 1 2 2 ... 10 10 11 1 ... 20 20 Here, the average time for each thread to complete is 10 + 20 / 2 or 15. So, it costs 30% more work to let each thread run "concurrently" without factoring in any overhead from the actual act of task switching, which in my example was zero, but can never actually be zero. By increasing sys.setcheckinterval (the default Python value is 10!) we allow more work to be done by each thread before it yields control to another thread. The astute observer would also be able to note that the total system work for CPU BOUND processes can never exceed the speed of serial processing. Because Zope is primarily CPU bound, fewer threads tend to be better. I believe that a corollary to this is the effect people observe when Zope undergoes "superlinear" degredation -- ie, too many things get caught up in Zope (because too many threads are started). I am sure this isn't the *only* reason that happens (I dont have a good observation suite to analyze it). However, once internal queues for work build up in Zope, they are very difficult to dissipate -- you have to have a substantial lessening in the work arrival rate. N.B. If you use my figure of 1,000,000 bytecodes as a predictor of the Zope publishing path, you'll realize that this is about 5 cpu quanta (again using a quanta of 5ms) on a 1Ghz machine which is a Zope publishing rate of about 40 pages/sec. For some applications this is an optimistic value. For others, Zope can publish at a faster rate. This is not intended to cover ALL applications, just a 'good guess' at one. I suggest running 'ab' or similar against a representative sample of YOUR applications pages to convert pages/sec into a guesstimate of the "cost" of your application. Session management built in Zope 2.5 is incompatible with Versions. Is this permanent and unresovable, or will this incompatibility get removed in Zope 2.6? In Zope 3? -- Milos Prudek

Passing not-string variables to a python script
by Dianne Van Dulken 17 Jun '02

17 Jun '02

Hi, I was hoping that I could get some help with this one, without looking too thick. I'm finding whenever I call a python script from within a zope page (as opposed to submitting a form to a script), it assumes that every parameter is a string. This isn't always the case, in fact, it is rarely the case. I was wondering if there was anyway that I could force it to know what type it was. I am particularly interested in passing in lists. The way I call it at the moment is like this: <dtml-var expr="script1(var1='blah', var2=['a', 'b', 'c'])"> etc. I tried calling them like var1:string, var2:list, but I get a syntax error. Ditto when I try setting types in the parameter list on the script option. I am using the "python script" default option that comes with zope, as opposed to importing one. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. I am certain there must be some way, but I haven't been able to discover it myself, and I certainly don't want to have to start every script with a split on , Thanks Di

There's not enough info here to help you, so you might want to post the code you are using to insert the data. You probably also want to post the results of a show table so folks can see the table you are trying to insert into. -Jon

RE: [Zope] worldpilot
by Ryan William Hughes 17 Jun '02

Adam, Alastair, The WorldPilot Licence was based simply on the wording of the Zope Public Licence (ZPL) at the time of Zope 1.x (1998/1999?). This was done to keep things simple in combination with Zope. Neuberger & Hughes absolutely encourages open source development, so if somebody would like to make changes to worldpilot, but sees the licence as a hindrance, an alternative licence would surely be an option, preferably the GPL, which we use on some other code as well in the mean time (although my understanding is that the GPL includes an Copyright Attribution clause at an appropriate location for code with user interaction, too ;-). Otherwise the current wording of the ZPL would be just as fine with us. WorldPilot was initially developed for Zope 1.x and was based on that version of the Product API. Zope 2.2.x introduced a change that didn't work with the way things work in WorldPilot, although as far we looked into it it seemed to (only) involve the Logoff call, but we didn't have time to delve further into that issue. Currently Neuberger & Hughes has been concentrating it's workgroup development efforts on a new workgroup server framework that goes beyond the requirements of a web based workgroup client, and has support for a much richer data model to provide interoperability capability with existing industry standard Workgroup clients. If somebody would like to adapt WorldPilot to their needs, but needs a different licence as proposed above should get in contact with me. RE: [Zope] win32 - best DBMS with Zope?
by Igor Leturia 17 Jun '02

17 Jun '02

>Having read a bit, I concluded the open source >DBMS to use with Zope was mySQL. Easier >said than done under win32, I've discovered. You're right, installing ZMySQLDA under windows is really difficult. I got it thanks to a doc I found I don't know where (maybe Derek sent it to me), but here you are. Igor Leturia Here's a document that says how I got it working. It would be nice if this could be turned into a "Howto" on the Zope.org website, but I don't have an account there. --Derek ------------------------- Ever try to get a MySQL server and Zope running under MS-Windows? Here's what I had to do. And no, I didn't find this documented anywhere. This was a bit challenging as I haven't really used MS-Windows for anything other than gaming in about 5 years. 1. Install and start Zope 2. Install and start MySQL server (I'm using mysqld-opt.exe) 3. Install ZMySQLDA (*) You need a Windows program that can handle tarballs, as ZMySQLDA, like most Zope "Products", is not distributed as a .zip file 4. Restart Zope 5. Notice that the ZMySQLDA Product is showing as "broken" in the Zope Control Panel, because you are missing the MySQL-python interface library (distributed separately) 6. Try to install MySQL-python (filename "MySQL-python-0.9.1.win32-py2.1.exe") (*) This will fail, because the Windows installer program will only unpack the files if it can find a "Python Installation" directory to unpack it into. There is no way to specify your Zope Python install as it will only let you choose a Python install that is finds in the registry (I *think*). I.e., you fscking NEED Python to get access to the files. A .zip file was not available for download. 7. Download and install the win32 Python 2.1.2 (to match your Zope 2.5.0's Python) 8. Now install MySQL-python (it should work this time) 9. Restart Zope, and notice that the ZMySQLDA Product is broken, because it is not finding the MySQL-python interface library 10. At this point, you'll need to either (a) have payed attention to the directories the Windows Installers used, or (b) go surfing around your hard drive until you find where Zope, Python, and MySQL-python were placed. For me it was (b). 11. Identify the files needed for MySQL-python. Since MS-Window's package management system doesn't provide an "rpm -ql" equivalent, I guessed this to be C:\Python21\ _mysql.pyd _mysql_exceptions.py _mysql_exceptions.pyc _mysql_exceptions.pyo MySQLdb/ [dir with all contents] ...then I copied those files into the directory C:\Program Files\Demo\lib\python That "Demo" is the name of the directory Zope was installed into. 12. Restart Zope. Is is working? Seems to be... I can talk to the database from Zope. It is correct and stable? Fsck if I know. --Derek
