dynamic dtml-tree
by dman 30 Apr '02

30 Apr '02

I found dtml-tree today, and it provides the exact UI I want to use. I even managed to make it work to display the contents of the current folder. I haven't yet seen any docs that describe how the dtml-tree works. The page that I will generate will be based on data from several SQL databases and consolidated by a Python Script. I need to know the structure of the data that dtml-tree expects and how to handle expansion requests. Any pointers, docs, discussions, or examples are greatly appreciated. -D -- Windows, hmmm, does it come with a GUI interface that works or just pretty blue screens? zpt wackyness
by Russell Uman 30 Apr '02

i have a main page template: index_html i have a number of content templates that i would like to include into my main page. the title property is set for each object: content_1, title = "number one" content_2, title = "number two" content_3, title = "number three" i'm trying to dynamically choose which content object to display based on a request variable. here is what i have in index_html: <HTML tal:define="page request/page | string:content_1"> <span tal:replace="python:container[page].title">title</span> <span tal:replace="structure python:container[page]">body</span> this is what i see if i browse to index_html?page=content_2 number one <ZopePageTemplate instance at 8960bf0> so the title is working! but the body is not. how can i get zope to include the contents of the object? is there a better way to translate a string into an object? if i make a call to tal:replace="container/content_1" i have no problems - i just can't figure out how to do this dynamically... thanks!

broken download link for 2.5.1-src
by Lance Sloan 30 Apr '02

30 Apr '02

On the page at <URL:http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/2.5.1/Zope-2.5.1-src.tgz/view>, the link for downloading points to <URL:http://10.0.11.2:1380/Products/Zope/2.5.1/Zope-2.5.1-src.tgz>. The host part of that URL, 10.0.11.2:1380, is wrong. When I replaced it with www.zope.org, I was able to download with no problem at all. -- Lance E Sloan Web Services, Univ. of Michigan: Full-service Web and database design, development, and hosting. Calling a method with an unusual name.
by Matt Gregory 30 Apr '02

30 Apr '02

I am forced to name all my zope methods with the extension .dtml because M$ word refuses to save the files in WebDAV unless they have an extension. This creates a problem when I try to call a python expression from DTML: <dtml-var "something.dtml"> comes back with "global name something not found". How do I call documents with an extension? example: <dtml-var "phys_petoverview2.dtml()">

color-syntax editor for dtml
by Milos Prudek 30 Apr '02

> Every editor worth its weight in bits can syntax highlight dtml. Both > emacs and vim do. Even editors without dtml awareness can do a fair > job with the The only trouble with vim is that vim syntax highlighting cannot deal with entity syntax &dtml-var; If you use entity syntax, the highlighting is confused from the first occurence of the entity down to the file bottom. I don't know how emacs behaves in this respect. -- Milos Prudek

Zope.org site trouble?
by Kevin Carlson 30 Apr '02

30 Apr '02

There seem to be a lot of "broken" links on the zope.org site. Most of the nav points to some subobject of 10.0.11.3:138. Anyone else having this problem? Is the site temporarily broken? Kevin

Re: [Zope] dtml-tree and leaves
by Anthony Baxter 30 Apr '02

> But, as you said, there is no leaves_expr. > > Maybe it will be necessary to do one, in the future. The problem is that dtml-tree's a really unpleasant beast once you start delving deeper into it. You _can_ do some neat stuff with it quickly, but it's pretty slow, and extremely awful to work with under the hood. I can't imagine anyone's likely to spend time adding yet another knob to something that's an unholy mess already. -- Anthony Baxter <anthony(a)interlink.com.au> It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

mid-level architecture question -- populating forms
by Dennis Allison 30 Apr '02

30 Apr '02

I am putting together a site with that accesses and updates a database. The essential structure is this: the web-user is presented with a form and provides enough information for the web application to find the desired information in the data base. This key information is passed to a External Method that accesses the data base and determine which of a number of forms are needed to manage the update. The External Method then has a number of choices vis-a-vis how to publish the form. Based on the key provided by the application and the data in the database, it can computed the name of a static form. It can then 1) construct a URL for the form with parameters to fill in the blanks, e.g., specialised_form_1?field1=somedata&field2=moredata and so forth. I'm not sure how one would invoke this as I suspect getitem() would be confused. 2) evaluate the data values and put them in the REQUEST object, then pass down the string 'specialized_form' to the page where the form is to appear, generate the form with a <dtml-var expr="getitem(form-name,1)"> and have the form look up the fill-in-the-blanks data in the REQUEST object. 3) generate the form on the fly (probably from a home-grown template) and fill in the data directly. 4) .... I'm leaning towards 2) but am still not really sure it's the best approach. Comments? -d PS: Zope 2.5, dtml-ish site not templates.
