Option -u does nothing?
by Gary Algier 15 Oct '01

I start zope with: exec /usr/local/it/bin/python \ $INST_HOME/z2.py \ -u zope \ -X -w zope.ulticom.com:80 and it looks like the -u option does not work: % ps -fp "$( < /export/zope-2.4.1/var/Z2.pid)" UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD root 14621 6308 0 12:51:29 ? 0:34 /usr/local/it/bin/python /export/homed/zope-2.4.1/z2.py -X -w zope.ulticom.com: root 6308 1 0 11:07:24 ? 0:00 python /export/homed/zope-2.4.1/z2.py -X -w zope.ulticom.com:80 -u zope Is -u not working? Or am I doing it wrong? Even if it did work, after the install everything belongs to root so I'm sure it would fail to run properly. So, a second questions begs to be answered: What files need to belong to the special user? -- Gary Algier, WB2FWZ gary.algier(a)ulticom.com +1 856 787 2758 Ulticom Inc., 1020 Briggs Rd, Mt. perf of file verus Zope objects

Hi, I will have a collection of documents (300 folders, 8 docs in each). I can manage this two ways : - 300 directories, each with 8 files, in the file hierarchy - 300 Zope folders, each with 8 DTMLDocments Each document has a size between half and one text page. Is there a big performance difference when retrieving+displaying one of these docs ? thanks, -- _/ _/ _/_/_/ _/_/ Michel.Vayssade(a)UTC.fr Service Informatique _/ _/ _/ _/ T:33/0-3.44.23.49.24 Universite de Technologie _/ _/ _/ _/ F:33/0-3.44.23.46.77 BP 20.529 60205 Compiegne _/_/ _/ _/_/ _ mv(a)utc.fr __/www.utc.fr/~vayssade____ France

RE: [ZOPE] newbie question: getting title_or_id from calling document
by Simon Brogden 15 Oct '01

Thanks for the swift reply Trevor, very much appreciated. I think I understand what you mean, but I'm unsure as to the solution. I've recreated the header and the index_html as DTML methods, both in the same folder, and know get the folder name as the title, as expected based on what you said in your email. I then created another header (public_header) and test (testing) DTML methods, and get the same results when I try to display the title/ID of the calling document in the public_header DTML method. I'm at a loss on how to proceed to solve my problem. Can anyone help? Thanks for your time, Simon. -----Original Message----- From: Trevor Toenjes [mailto:zope@toenjes.com] Sent: 15 October 2001 18:28 To: Simon Brogden; zope(a)zope.org Subject: RE: [ZOPE] newbie question: getting title_or_id from calling document >From one Newbie to another... DTML-methods inherit the properties of the calling container. In many cases, this is the folder that is being rendered. So the index_html that is called from the folder, takes on the properties, title, id, etc, from that folder. This assumes that index_html is a method and not a Doc. It took me a couple weeks using Zope to realize that the default folder set-up that includes index_html as a document should seldom be used... <read...never> (Actually I suggest that this should be removed from the ZMI, because it trips up most newbies. Or at least give the option to create index_html as a method.) Most of the Zopistas have told me that DTML-Documents are bad. In general you will mostly want to use Methods for everything that is an object or part of a template. DTML-Documents are good for just content. <read...text.> And consider the emminent message from anyone saying "USE ZPT instead of DTML". ;) -Trevor > -----Original Message----- > From: zope-admin(a)zope.org [mailto:zope-admin@zope.org]On Behalf Of Simon > Brogden > Sent: Monday, October 15, 2001 1:05 PM > To: zope(a)zope.org > Subject: [ZOPE] newbie question: getting title_or_id from calling > document > > > Hello! > > I'm trying to create a standard_header that when included in a document > uses the calling documents namespace. newbie question: getting title_or_id from calling document
by Simon Brogden 15 Oct '01

15 Oct '01

Hello! I'm trying to create a standard_header that when included in a document uses the calling documents namespace. So, if the standard_header was: <html> <head> <title><dtml-var title_or_id></title </head> ... ... and the index_html document had as it's first line: <dtml-var standard_header> How can I make the standard header DTML document write the title/ID of index_html or any of the documetns that call/include it?. Apologies in advance if I'm being thick. Cheers, Simon.

Do All Classes Have Default Current Objects?
by Dan Shafer 15 Oct '01

15 Oct '01

I was rummaging about in Zope last night trying to figure out how I could find out the user name of the current user. Turns out, of course, to be pretty easy. But I would never have thought of it without the HowTo's help. I had tried using AuthenticedUser.getUserName() without success but when I changed to use the apparently automatically defined AUTHENTICATED_USER object, it worked. So two questions. 1. Do all of the Zope Classes have an equivalent object that I should use when I want to invoke their methods on the current instance? Or is this true only of objects passed via the REQUEST? 2. Is this fact -- or anything else about these globals -- documented anywhere? I looked through the Zope Book, ZQR, HowTos and Tips to no avail. I also searched the online help. I did find a _reference_ to AUTHENTICATED_USER and to REQUEST.AUTHENTICATED_USER in a function called SecurityGetUser() but no real information on the use of the AuthenticatedUser class itself. -- Learn to absorb information, internalize new ideas, and generate creative solutions three times faster, triple guaranteed!
