Leaking Oracle connections & processes
by Shai Berger 08 Jan '01

08 Jan '01

Hi guys, We are trying to build a site with Zope and Oracle, and we see again and again a situation where Oracle connections and processes are being leaked: the more we work, the more there are, until we reach Oracle's limit for number of processes. At this point, the Connection objects close on their own, and you can't even open SQL*Plus until Zope is closed or restarted. We use Oracle's default limit on the number of processes, which is 50. We have about three users (developers), two Oracle connections in the application (one for SqlSessions and one for other data), and although we use some devious multithreading (some of our transactions call an external method which essentially URLRetrieve()s a URL from our own Zope server in a separate thread), 50 open connections should be more than enough. I have checked a little before the disaster, and it seems that not all those processes actually have connections; the problem may be unrelated to open connections, but just to processes. We do one fishy thing that may also be related: We keep some long raw data; we keep it all in one table, and other tables which need long columns hold pointers (indices) into this table. To put data into this table from Zope, we use an external method SaveLONG, which uses the database connection to access the DB (in order to use the transactionality of the whole thing). We use it in ZSQL methods as follows: #################################################################### INSERT INTO items ( field, long_field_ptr ) VALUES ( <dtml-sqlvar value type=string> <dtml-var "SaveLONG(DB_CONNECTION, long_value)"> ) #################################################################### SaveLONG saves the long value in the long data table and returns its index in the table. The source for SaveLONG is this. It relies on a DB trigger to populate the LONG_ID field from a sequence. #################################################################### long_table_name = 'LONG_DATA' long_column_name = 'LONG_DATA' long_seq_name = 'SEQ_LONG_DATA' index_column_name = 'LONG_ID' save_command = ''' INSERT INTO %s (%s) VALUES (:content) ''' % (long_table_name,long_column_name) get_key_command = 'SELECT %s.currval FROM dual' % long_seq_name # # Put a long raw on the DB # def SaveLONG(self,connection, content): connection = connection._v_database_connection.db # the real DB connection object connection.execute(save_command, content=dbi.dbiRaw(content)) connection.execute(get_key_command) return connection.fetchone()[0] #################################################################### We're using Zope 2.2.4 with ZOracleDA 2.1.0 and DCOracle 1.3.2 with Oracle 8.0.5 on an intel-linux (RH). Can anyone see anything wrong with what we're doing? Is anyone else experiencing this kind of problems? Thanks in advance, Shai

EMarket 0.1.04b1
by James Sintz 08 Jan '01

08 Jan '01

Perhaps I'm missing something fundamental, but I can't seem to figure out how to add products to EMarket 0.1.04b1 running on Zope 2.2.2 Everything installed just fine and I can add an EMarket object, but I don't see where, or how I go about adding things to sell. I don't care about the auction features, I just want to sell a handful of products on my site. When I go to the MarketItems folder, and try submitting an item using the ShopperMarketItemAddForm it returns a screen saying "You must be validated for submission first...". I am logged in as a manager. If I log out and then register a new user and then try I'm told I don't have permission to add a new MarketItem. What gives? The read me doesn't provide much insight on what I am doing wrong. Are there zClasses I need to add or templates I need to create before the thing will work? Thanks!! Jamey

[python] converting int to string?
by Lee 08 Jan '01

08 Jan '01

Hi, I wonder if anyone could help me here... Is there any way to convert an integer to a string data type in Python? I see there is a facility for accomplishing the reverse conversion (string -> int)? I have 4 integers, which are primarily used to handled the logic in the program below (in the while loops). The value of this integer must also be added to a string (as a table column name), which will be used to create a SQL query. Here's a rough sketch of the program: p = 2 # no.of practicals t = 2 # no.of tutorials a = 2 # no.of assignments b = 3 # no.of bomus marks c = "52225" SQL = "CREATE TABLE CLASS" + c + "\n" SQL = SQL + "( \n" SQL = SQL + "matric float, \n" SQL = SQL + "fname varchar, \n" SQL = SQL + "lname varchar, \n" SQL = SQL + "uname varchar, \n" while p > 0 : SQL = SQL + "p" + p + " integer, \n" # cannot add type "int" to string p = p - 1 while t > 0 : SQL = SQL + "t" + t + " char(1), \n" t = t - 1 while a > 0 : SQL = SQL + "a" + a + " integer, \n" a = a - 1 while b > 1 : SQL = SQL + "b" + b + " integer, \n" b = b - 1 while b > 0 : SQL = SQL + "b" + b + " integer \n" # ',' taken out from last query b = b - 1 SQL = SQL + ")" Of course, I could have a load of statements in the while loops like: if p = 1: pString="1" ... etc. But that would look hella ugly! Another alternative would be to send both the integer value and a string parameter (converted by Zope) in the calling DTML method. This is okay - but is there a better way to do it? As usual, thankyou very much in advance. Is this off-topic BTW? Should I address any future questions regarding Python to a Python newsgroup/list? -- Lee Reilly mailto:lee.reilly@ntlworld.com http://www.footkick.co.uk/lee

ZDESIGN IDEAS = How to improve 'manage' ?
by Spicklemire, Jerry 08 Jan '01

Jason mentioned : > The need to improve the manage interface has grown urgently > clear to me while using Zope myself, designing for all sorts > of community and collaborative Zope-based projects, demos for > a number of innocent bystanders, interested parties and > potential clients. Zope 'manage' is plain primitive at present. (and lot's more) Though I haven't seen much in the way of details, the link below may overlap to some degree: http://dev.zope.org/Wikis/DevSite/Projects/ManagementInterfaceQuickFix/Front Page and from the looks of : http://dev.zope.org/Wikis/DevSite/Projects/ManagementInterfaceQuickFix/Curre ntStatus things seem to be moving ahead. There are so many projects it's not really possible to stay on top of it all, at least for me. Keep in mind that PTK is rapidly approaching v. 1.0, and for what you have described as your project range, that may have a huge impact. See: http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope-web/2001-January/000275.html especially: > However it sounds like what you really want is the PTK: > > http://www.zope.org/Products/PTK/ > > The CVS version of PTK is more friendly to WebDAV, especially when > combined with Zope 2.3's ability to run on a "source port" (that > is, a port where GET requests don't render the document). I try to intercept exceptions in a Python Method without success. The following code works well: try: a = int('a') except: return 'exception.' but the next doesn't work: try: a = int('a') except ValueError: return 'exception' How can I intercept a concrete exception?
