Slightly OT: Server Admin w/Zope - best approach?

Slightly off topic perhaps but potentially intersting to many here, I hope! I'm considering, partly out of curiosity and partly out of hopes that I may get some customers one day who could use it, how I would go about implementing a server administration tool (a la Webmin for example) within a Zope infrastructure. It seems to me that a lot of use could be made of the Zope user/role/privilege facilities to provide a fine grained delegation capability in a relatively secure way; the benefits are obvious (at least to me). Likewise DTML and the SQL facilities couls allow very easy integration with a customer tracking/billing database and products would let me plug-in new capababilities in a neat way. Sounds nice to me! The question I have still to find a good resolution to is how to deal with the backend functionality - updating files, running scripts etc which probably need, at least in part, to be run as root (or as a member of wheel at least). I can see several possibilities -- build an interface to linuxconf for example (but that's non portable), create a slew of suid scripts executable from zope external methods (but how risky is this?), put zope in 'wheel' (no, I don't think I woudl want to do that) and so on ..... I suspect someone may have done something similar already or at least have an opinion on the best way forwards ... any suggestions would be welcome. Of course I suppose I could actually use webmin but that would mean the other P language which I have forgotten ho-to for the moment). -- Nigel Head Houbits Hi-Tech Servers nhead(a)houbits.com

Does anybody know how the login is handled by GUF. I use cookie authentication and I get the loginptomt when I try to access a page that has authenticate permissions. But when I try to login I don't know how to get the user logged i.e I don't know how to set the cookie. Can anybody help me ? /Mathias Bengtsson

accessing PARENTS from python???

I am trying to access the PARENT of an object in a python class of mine. I want to use the absolute_url() of the parent in a variable. I though it could be done the following way, but got an error: parent=self.PARENTS[0] aurl = parent.absolute_url() I then tried using REQUEST. It works, but doesn't give the correct information. Instead of giving me the parent of the current object(self), it gives the parent of the DTML page in which the object was called. parent=self.REQUEST.PARENTS[0] aurl = parent.absolute_url() How do you resolve the PARENT object of an object? Help with installing PoPy & ZPoPyDA

Hi, I downloaded the current versions of ZPoPyDA, and PoPy from www.mixadlive.com, and I cannot figure out how to execute the installation. This must be a simple problem, but I would appreciate any help. In the README.in it instructs to untar, then ./configure. I /should/ CD first right? In either case, there is no success. I see a configure.in but no configure. Here is a copy of the ZPoPyDA folder, and a sample of command line errors. Please give me some clues! Zope on Linux, Oracle on another machine (Solaris) what to do?

Hello, Newbie question here... Thank you for any and all help... The subject line says it all.. What's the best way to connect an instance of Zope running on a Linux box to an instance of Oracle 7.3 running on a Solaris box in the same subnet... As far as I can tell, the OracleDA seems designed to connect an instance of Zope and an instance of Oracle running on the same machine.. We don't want to do that because then we would effectively have to buy Oracle twice.. (we already have the 7.3 server up and running..) Am I wrong? I am willing to go through the whole Oracle install on this machine, to get the libraries, but I need to know that I'm not barking up the wrong tree.. Also, are there any other decent alternatives? RESPONSE.write() slow

I want to be able to download dynamic content (coming from a relational database) via Zope as a file. I do this by calling RESPONSE.write() which works fine but it is very slow When I download a greater package with an External method (on the bottom of the mail), I just get downloads of 3 to 12 KB/s in my LAN and even locally on the same machine. Also the thread sending the data uses >90% CPU. Can anybody tell me why it is so slow or how I can speed that up?
