But.. maybe will be a general problem for contributed products wchich uses MailHost (such as EMarket, ETailer, maybe WordlPilot etc) bacause MailHost API (especially MailHost.add) method was changed in 2.2 branch (in current 2.1.7 too), due to use of standard smtplib module. And there is a big and serious problem (I think not only for me:). On my Win box Zope2.2b1 craches (GFP), dont allow add objects (eg. Folder), dont allow enter Control Panel if product incorect installed, etc.. 2.2b1 is very , very unstable for now. Of course I understand the reasons (a lot of very important changes). If I would help to avoid some problems I can test v2.2b2 extensively, especially on Win32 box (Win98, Win2000) and a little (for comparison of behaviour) on RH Linux. dtml-sqltest to support SOUNDEX?
by Kyler B. Laird 16 Jun '00

16 Jun '00

I think I've determined that there's no clean way to specify a function to be used on a sqltest variable. I'd like to be able to do something like <dtml-sqltest soundex(lname) column="soundex(last_name)" type=nb optional> but it doesn't seem possible. I hope that I am missing something. Yes, I know there are lots of kludges to get around this, but then I lose the clean design of sqltest - especially if I want to use "optional" or "multiple". Any suggestions? Thank you. --kyler

The explantion: SQL methods are much more stupid than DTML methods! If used in the way you do it, SQL methods look only in the REQUEST object and not in the namespace. This means (if called from a WEB request, i.e. REQUEST is defined): <dtml-call new_scheme> is equivalent to <dtml-call "new_scheme(REQUEST)">. Your <dtml-in>, however, has placed the fields into the namespace "_" and not in the REQUEST object. You cannot use <dtml-call "new_scheme(_)"> either, because SQL methods require a "get" method from their first parameter ("_" does not have it). For the moment, you have to use on of these ways: 1. <dtml-call "new_scheme(new_product=new_product, scheme=scheme)"> or 2. <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('new_product',new_product)"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('scheme',scheme)"> <dtml-call new_scheme> I prefered 1. in my solution. Hi guys, First of all, I'd like to apologize for the pain factor here - there has been some CM process changes around here and the 2.1.x branch is suffering as a result :( I have a proposal, however, that I hope will make this much easier. How about if we: o release a "Product" today that, if you install it and restart your Zope (no matter what version), patches the hole at runtime (in memory change only). o retract the 2.1.7 release in favor of getting 2.2 beta 2 out on Monday, which doesn't have the cruft problem of the 2.1.x branch and contains all fixes to date (and which will fix SQLMethod problems and support the SiteAccess release that Evan is making today). I can have the new "hotfix" product ready by 12:00pm EST today. Brian Lloyd brian(a)digicool.com Software Engineer 540.371.6909 Digital Creations http://www.digicool.com

Zope Database Connection
by Ivan Raikov 16 Jun '00

16 Jun '00

Hi all, I am trying to figure out a way to use a Zope Database Connection object from within a Python class, which is then going to be subclassed by a ZClass. In my Python class, I want to have an instance of the parent class of all Zope Database Connections, so that I can work with all types of connections (be it Gadfly, Solid, or whatever). However, I am not sure which class this is. I think it is Shared.DC.ZRDB.Connection.Connection. Is that correct? Also, in the creation form of my ZClass, I'd like to have a connection selection dialog, similar to the one in the creation form of ZSQL Method. How do I get a list of connection instances in the current folder? Thanks, Ivan Raikov

Yes - that is one of the nice side-benefits of doing it this way: look in the Control_Panel/Products and you will see the hotfix product in the listing. Click on it and click the "README" tab to view the readme file that describes the hotfix. Brian Lloyd brian(a)digicool.com Software Engineer 540.371.6909 Digital Creations http://www.digicool.com

Is there any way to confirm that the hotfix has been installed? I extracted the files and restarted Zope but it would be nice if there was a way to confirm that it is installed.

Containment or context
by Stephen Harrison 16 Jun '00

16 Jun '00

Hi, I've been trying to piece together a site which exploites acquisition, but I have come up against a problem. This basically boils down to the chosen method for acquisiton. I can have a site with the following structure: / +- foo | +- stuff | +- etc... +- bar | +- more stuff | +- etc... +- baz +- and so on where foo, bar and baz are folder objects, which contain various methods, etc. Now, I can construct urls such as: /foo /bar /baz /foo/baz /bar/baz ... and in each of these the child will operate within the context of the parent. At least that is how I would like it to work. But, having read the AcquisitionAlgebra, http://www.zope.org/Members/jim/Info/IPC8/AcquisitionAlgebra/siframes.htm and a post to the list a while back, http://zope.nipltd.com/public/lists/zope-archive.nsf/ByKey/4C6995D8A903E711 I have learnt that acquisition works on the principle of containment before context. Unfortunately this is exactly what I don't want. I want context before containment, because that is the whole reason that I am construction urls in this way. The only reason that foo, bar and baz are all contained in / is so that they will all be available within the context of each other (the wonders of acquisition), but once they have been acquired, the context is all-important. Imaging that baz produces a set of data. Imagine also that within the context of foo or bar only certain subsets of baz's data are relevant. So I could go to /baz and see all the data, or /foo/baz and see only the data relevant to foo. But because of "containment before context", if I have a property as an atribute of foo to let baz know which data is important, baz will ignore it, because there is a property as an attribute of / to define the global case, which baz will use. Why is this? In http://www.zope.org/Members/Hoekstra/ChangingContexts1 it states that PARENTS is defined as the acquisition parents of an object. But this is not true. The acquisition parents of baz are / alone, but if I evaluate PARENTS from the url /foo/bar/baz/foo I will get parents of foo, baz, bar, foo, /. This is inconsistent with the idea of containment before context, and yet this is, in my opinion, the more useful case. Asuming that acquisition works the way that it does and that it is right that it should work that way (although I could be missing some reason as to why that is best), is there some other way by which I can acquire properties by, effectively, the context route? Either way, any feedback would be most welcome. Cheers, Stephen -- Stephen Harrison stephen(a)nipltd.com New Information Paradigms www.nipltd.com
