Updating problem
by Ross Boylan 10 Dec '99

10 Dec '99

I installed the latest and greatest products, updating some existing ones. Some of the products have .zexp components. For Zwiki I moved the file under imports, and then attempted to import it I get the error shown below. I can not find an object named zwiki (as opposed to ZWiki) in my products folder, nor at the top level. A lower level folder has an item called zwiki; I do not believe it is eligible for acquisition, because it's in a separate branch. I ran into a similar problem with ZDiscussion, but in that case I was able to delete the product and then do the import. I'd appreciate any clues about this particular problem, or about the general question of how to import safely when one already has objects using earlier versions of the classes. ----------------------------- error and traceback below here------------------------------------------- The object zwiki does not support this operation Traceback (innermost last): File /web/main/src/Zope/2.1.0b2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_module File /web/main/src/Zope/2.1.0b2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 179, in publish File /web/main/src/Zope/2.1.0b2/lib/python/Zope/__init__.py, line 202, in zpublisher_exception_hook (Object: ElementWithAttributes) File /web/main/src/Zope/2.1.0b2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 165, in publish File /web/main/src/Zope/2.1.0b2/lib/python/ZPublisher/mapply.py, line 160, in mapply (Object: manage_importObject) File /web/main/src/Zope/2.1.0b2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 102, in call_object (Object: manage_importObject) File /web/main/src/Zope/2.1.0b2/lib/python/OFS/ObjectManager.py, line 479, in manage_importObject (Object: ElementWithAttributes) File /web/main/src/Zope/2.1.0b2/lib/python/OFS/CopySupport.py, line 374, in _verifyObjectPaste (Object: ElementWithAttributes) Copy Error: (see above)

site search
by Timothy Wilson 10 Dec '99

10 Dec '99

Hi everyone, I'm trying to implement a search feature on my site. Basically, I've created a form for searching with two radio buttons, one for searching the Internet and the other for searching my site with ZCatalog. Do I need to use any DTML trickery here or can I easily get the form to direct the action to different places based on which radio button is selected? I really hope this isn't some really obvious HTML question, but I hunted around and I can't find a good example or any easy answers. Thanks. -Tim -- Timothy Wilson | "The faster you | Check out: Henry Sibley H.S. | go, the shorter | http://slashdot.org/ W. Suggestion for improving http://www.zope.org/
by Steele, Frank 10 Dec '99

10 Dec '99

I am trying to pick up Zope, and very impressed with it as a tool. I have one complaint with the Zope site, however..... Now that there are starting to be dozens of Zope products, the flat representation at http://www.zope.org/Products doesn't work so well. Older (but still useful) products aren't listed (e.g. TinyTable) -- the current oldest is mid-September. Additionally, all you have to go by is the name of the product, which sometimes isn't descriptive (Webstar). Obviously, if you know what you're looking for, you can just search the text of the update posting. Some of us, however, don't know what we're looking for :->. It would be nice to be able to view by: submission date and some sort of functional keyword(s) (DAs, logging, ad and page tracking, import/export, user handling, etc.). It would also be nice if on the listing pages, there were a capsule description, so people could quickly eliminate products that don't apply to their situation. It would also be incredible (I'm working on doing this for an internal documentation site) to allow people (maybe members-only) to subscribe to a product. Subscribers get e-mail notification when a product gets updated. They might also be able to subscribe to how-tos, tips and documentation updates for that specific product. If this is > true what have people done to try and get around this, ie archiving > objects (however that could occur) etc.. ? Zope stores its objects in one file. Linux on 32 bit systems has a 2GB file size limiation. -Michel

While this is all well and good, I've found it _very_ easy to lose track of whether you're in a version or not. What we do now is have a local development Zope server, which we beat up on and make all sorts of changes to. When these are stable, we then scp the Data.fs file over to the production server. To be fair, the main reason that we do this is that the development server is on a local ethernet, while the production ones are on the other side of the pacific ocean - the network lag really really bites. There's also (I'm convinced) a problem somewhere in the Oracle DA's error handling that can lead to crashes - since the development server is where we get the SQL errors, this is a good thing to have off the production system. (Anyone know of a Purify for linux? something that can deal with vendor-supplied libraries...) Anthony -- Anthony Baxter <anthony(a)interlink.com.au> It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

Note that someone posted on the Zope site the necessary magic to use the Sybase DA with FreeTDS. I believe that FreeTDS supports MS SQL 7. However, most don't - I've patched both dcOracle and dcSybase to throw the exception with a third arg, the sql command. I'm pretty sure patches are in the Collector. [ANNOUNCE] Digital Creations Chooses Mozilla For Next Generation Zope Management Zope Management
by Mike Pelletier 10 Dec '99

10 Dec '99

Digital Creations announced today that the next generation of its Zope application server will leverage browser technology from the Mozilla project. Zope is the leading Open Source application server, specializing in content management systems, portals, and custom solutions. Mozilla is a next-generation Web browser, developed as an Open Source project and delivering technology for AOL's Netscape products. "Zope is the premier example of a pure Internet architecture for application servers," says Paul Everitt, CEO of Digital Creations. "However, being competitive in the content management and portal management markets requires an upgrade to Zope's classic Web front end. With Mozilla we get an advanced environment for Web applications that enhances the Zope vision of a pure Internet architecture. It's a natural fit for these two Open Source leaders to work together." Mitchell Baker, Chief Lizard Wrangler for mozilla.org, said "Mozilla is a new, standards-based architecture for next-generation Web applications. This alliance with Zope is an innovative example of coupling this new browser seamlessly with a powerful server architecture. We are excited to welcome Digital Creations and the Zope community in this initiative." The goal of the Zope/Mozilla initiative is to deliver a next-generation management environment for Zope that retains an end-to-end Open Source solution for web applications. This initiative will spawn a number of Zope community projects led by Digital Creations and others. A roadmap, initial architecture documents, and a prototype will be unveiled at the Zope Track at the Eighth International Python Conference in January 2000. Additional information about the initiative will be maintained at: http://www.zope.org/Resources/Mozilla Digital Creations is the creator of Zope and the leader in Open Source web development. Zope is an Open Source application server for building high-performance, dynamic web sites. Zope runs on nearly all UNIX platforms as well as Windows NT, and can be used with popular web servers or its own built-in web server. Visit www.digicool.com for more information, and get Zope free at www.zope.org. Mozilla.org is the group founded by Netscape to be responsible for making Mozilla a successful open-source project; it exists to support the entire Mozilla community. Validating data entry (dates)
by Henny van der Linde 10 Dec '99

10 Dec '99

Hi, Is there an elegant way to validate fields in a form before submitting. For example: I have a date field. I want to check, before submitting the form, if the date entered is valid. Is there someting like a function as: Date.IsValid (I haven a Delphi background). What I don't want is a Zope generated standard error screen. I want a custom designed error message/page. thanks, Henny van der Linde
