Sure this is very easy in Zope. You will need a database, and the apropriate Zope Database Adapter. Create a Database Connection and type in a valid connection string which connects you to your database. Create a DTML method 'input' with your form in it, with the form action pointing to another DTML Method 'output' ie: <form action="output">. Let's say one of your form elements is named 'name' ie: <input type="textbox" name="name">. Create a ZSQL Method called 'insertName' with one argument, 'name' and containing SQL code that inserts this value into the database. something like: INSERT INTO my_table_with_one_column_called_name name VALUES () Now create the 'output' DTML method to contain:   Thanks for the input! Forms with Zope

Hi all, I'm a complete newbie with Zope. I've installed the beast and it works great. I would like to know if it is possible to create a 'classical' database application with forms. The goal is to have the app accessing a database that the users will fill as the information come in. Is there is a tutorial to do such a thing? Thanks in advance, Cyril Elkaim

Decision time

I've been hanging around the list, looking at Zope, and I really really like it. If I had to create a small or medium website I'd use it without hesitation. However, I would like to use it for a website that'll hopefully be visited by a lot of people. And I do mean a lot. So the question is, can Zope handle it? Will Zope be able to scale even to high loads? So I'd like to hear from people who use it now, especially from DC, what kind of loads you've used it under, how many hits it help up under, benchmarks, whatever can reassure me that Zope can handle high loads. 'Casue I really do want to use Zope. No - you just need to create "views" for the property sheets that you want to be able to manipulate for your MSFile instances. A quick example: go to your MSFile ZClass and click on "Property Sheets", and create a property sheet called "ExtraProperties" with a few defined properties. Next, click on the "Views" tab of your MSFile class and add a new "view" that points to that property sheet (type "Extra" in the New text box, and select "propertysheets/ExtraProperties/manage" from the select list and click the "Add" button. Now your MSFile instances should have an "Extra" tab in their mgmt interface, which will take you to the form for managing the extra properties on that instance. Hope this helps! Down-level user folder conflict

I have another interesting authorization failure problem (Zope 2.0.0b1). Let's say I have folder called Restricted. Permissions for this folder is restricted to users of a specific privileged role called Editor. Inside this folder I also have a standard user folder with one such Editor user defined. The problem arises when the user is viewing a document in the Restricted folder, and the document is referring to objects -- such as images through <img> tags -- from the _unrestricted_ part of the database. It'll give "Unauthorized" on these objects no matter what. Remember that these objects aren't restricted at all; the Anonymous role has full View access. My suspicion is that if the browser passes an authentication header that does not match a valid user (known to the folder or any up-level folders through acquisition; in my case the whole idea is that the user folder is not visible from the part of the site that the browser passes an authentication header to), then Zope will not revert to the anonymous role, but will instead just block the user unconditionally. If I move the user folder into the top-level folder, everything is groovy. Not to nitpick -- well, all right, it IS to nitpick: ;) "Thunking" is usually referred to bridging between interfaces of different bitness; for example, calling 16-bit code from a 32-bit native process. Its generic meaning is, historically at least, "a compiler-generated stub procedure". As legends go, "thunk" is a deliberate misspelling of "thought" ("the past tense of `think' at two in the morning"). Afai, it's a formalized construct in Scheme -- the closest analog in Python I guess would be code objects. Jargon file says this: http://www.srdc.metu.edu.tr/dengi/computer/jargon/thunk.html You could extend "thunking" generally to mean any bridge-like service, I guess (first time I've seen this usage), but isn't that what we use "wrapper" for? ODBC and Inserting not committed

Hi, With 2b1, win32, I now find that my Zsql inserts don't commit. They last for as long as the browser is active. I start another browser session after closing the first one down, and they're gone. Updates seem to commit though. Bizarre. ------- Regards, Graham Chiu gchiu<at>compkarori.co.nz

opinions needed on methods for file download...

Hi, I have a situation where I have a lot of files in a unix directory. They are all 'labelled up' in an SQL database which holds data such as filename, date_uploaded, owner, version and mimetype. The output DTML is similar to this at the moment, where log_entries is some SQL that returns filename, mimetype and idnum, whilst dump_file is a simple external method that puts the right content-type header on the data and reads it out to the browser. <dtml-in log_entries> <tr> <td><a href=dump_file?filename=<dtml-var filename url_quote>&mimetype=<dtml-var mimetype url_quote>><dtml-var idnum></a></td> <td><dtml-var filename></td> <td><dtml-var mimetype></td> <td><dtml-var owner></td> <td><dtml-var uploaded></td> </tr> </dtml-in> The problem is that the URLs are really clunky and the file download name is always 'dump_file'.
