Could we migrate Zope email to a news group?

The volume and variety of email on the Zope email lists would be better managed, I think, in a news group. Advantages: This would make it more visible in DejaNews, where some more folks would find us that otherwise wouldn't be as likely to stumble on, browse and learn from our old threads. It would be less disruptive for folks, like myself, who have their email setup to interrupt their work, but who turn to news only when ready for a break. My news reader is a better tool than my mailer for dealing with the selection and following of multiple long threads. How about creating some such news group as: comp.internet.zope comp.networks.zope comp.infosystems.www.servers.zope ?? and after it is a voted on and approved, pushing this email list (and the dev list) to news? ======================================================================= I won't rest till it's the best ... Moving a Folder into another Folder

I'm trying to use DTML to move a Folder from within one Folder to another Folder. I have tried a bunch of permutations of manage_cutObjects and manage_pasteObjects and can't seem to make any of them work. (The errors usually make it appear that the pasteObjects method can't find anything on the clipboard.) I haven't tried using an External Method, but I'm assuming this is possible to do via DTML. Any tips on the syntax here? Specifically, I am trying to move a Folder with an ID that is an integer (the time) from /incoming to /Year/Month. I'm anticipating that I'll be able to eliminate this when the Catalog comes along. Thanks in advance, Kevin

External methods, DocumentTemplate and EPSF

Hello all! I have some questions conserning external methods... First: In an external method ( def ex_meth(self) ) self is reffering to the folder object containing the method that actually does the call? (this is how I understand the documentation) - how can I access the variables in the calling methods namespace? Second: I use three different DTML methods (contents, navbar and links) to make up the backbone of my pages, all three are called from one main setup method (main). Main is aqusitioned by the different folders, the rest of the methods are spesial to each folder. Question is - how can I access these methods from an external method and add and use them in external python string format (EPSF) so that the return from the external method will display a page with the normal backbone build? Third: How can I pass variables made in an external method back to the calling method so that it'll be available there? Help is much appreciated. Sture Lygren

I would *not* be suprised. I believe that the problem is that medusa's ftp server wants to look up the hostname of the server machine. On Win95 machines which are not connected to a network this fails. I think that this can be fixed by adding an entry in your Win95 hosts file (\windows\hosts) like so: 127.0.0.1 localhost If I recall correctly, I think that a hosts file doesn't exist by default on Win95 machines. But there may be a sample hosts file in \windows\hosts.sam. That said, I think that medusa's ftp server shouldn't have to make this host name lookup. I am looking at implementing a fix/work around for this and submitting it to Sam Rushing. I'll also add this information to the ZServer INSTALL.txt file. -Amos

My guess is IP_ADDRESS in your start.py is not set right, however I believe it defaults to 127.0.0.1, does Win95 not have a 127.0.0.1 (loopback) interface? I would *not* be suprised. -Michel localhost 127.0.0.1 is set in the hosts file of windows. Also the names and the IP-adresses of my two PC's on that network. Now, I've changed several values in start.py, I've changed Hostname to the name of my server and changed the paths etc in start.py. It still gives this error (see previous message)... :-( Tom.

[I accidentally sent this directly to the poster first. If I could make a suggestion: Maybe the list admin could have the list output a correct Reply-To field. That would be good.] I suggest a dual news/list solution, which has been successfully (at least according to Mr. Udell) deployed by Byte and others. By this I mean a new server which replicates to the mailing list, and a mailing list that replicates to the news server. It works, and gives you pretty much the best of both worlds. I have a tabular object with a column() method which returns a Results object containing information about the table columns. This lets me programmatically build results tables pretty nicely: <TABLE BORDER=1><TR>  <TH></TH> </TR>  <TR> <TD></TD> </TR>  </TABLE> However, when I want to try to do some summary statistics on the tablular object where I build the stat-name, it appears the statistics() method looks at the wrong results object. <TABLE BORDER=1><TR> <TH></TH>  <TH></TH> </TR>   <TR><TD># Items</TD>  <TD></TD> </TR>   </TABLE> When statistics() iterates over the results objects, it can't find the item 'name' using either getitem or mapping because the 'item' dictionary contains : {'__module__': 'Shared.DC.ZRDB.Results', '__doc__': None} instead of just the results object which should contain the item 'name'. Even if I explicitly name the 'count-column' name, it still isn't finding the correct object, so I don't think that I'm off-base using "_['count-'+colname]". Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong here such that the statistics method can't seem to point at the correct object? Why can  A obtain the correct value, but  can't? Thanks Kent

Installing ZServer

Hi, Still in my 'Zope hype' I installed it on my old DX2 66Mhz pc with Windows95. It works!!!. I've installed 1.11 and I like it even better then 1.10.2 ... if you keep going like this.... what will 2.0 become? Better graphics also! :-) I must say that it is slow (slower then 1.10.2).... but I guess this is normal seeing my computer configuration... :-) Now, I wanted to try out the ZServer instead of the ZopeHTTPServer. So I created the following batchfile : set ZOPE_DEBUG_MODE=1 set PYTHONHOME='D:\WebSite\' "D:\WebSite\bin\python" "D:\WebSite\ZServer\start.py" However, I always get the following error : log: adding channel <trigger at 920320> Traceback (innermost last): File "D:\WebSite\ZServer\start.py", line 96, in ? from FTPServer import FTPServer File "D:\WebSite\ZServer\FTPServer.py", line 140, in ? from medusa.ftp server import ftp_channel, ftp_server, recv_channel File "D:\WebSite\ZServer\medusa\ftp_server.py", line 58, in ? By the way I find this to be a most excellent explanation. For the default public interface of a folder, it seems to me that it should be a DTMLMethod. In browsing a default install of Zope 1.11.0pr1 the top level folder's default interface is a DTMLMethod, likewise the QuickStart. When you add a Folder and check Create Public Interface and then click add it adds a DTMLDocument not DTMLMethod. Is this the currently desired effect? Or is this legacy functionality due to pre 1.10.x and DTMLMethods? If so would the following be a reasonable way to handle the current philosophy? (According to my understanding.)
