- HTMLFile-like class that heeds DTML mod time

I got tired of having to restart my ZopeHTTPServer every time I twiddled a DTML file used by a published object, so I wrote the following simple class that checks the mod time of the DTML file when it's called, and recreates its HTMLFile instance if necessary. I instantiate it instead of HTMLFile. class Template: def __init__(self, file): self.file = file self.template = DocumentTemplate.HTMLFile(self.file) self.ftime = os.stat(self.file)[stat.ST_MTIME] def __call__(self, *args, **kargs): ftime = os.stat(self.file)[stat.ST_MTIME] if self.ftime < ftime: self.ftime = ftime self.template = DocumentTemplate.HTMLFile(self.file) return apply(self.template.__call__, args, kargs) I'm sure there's probably a simple way to integrate this into DocumentTemplate.HTMLFile directly, but this seemed easier to me, what with the mixins and such that are used in DocumentTemplates, and all I really need are __init__ and __call__ methods. Consider this a feature request (I also submitted it to the Zope web site.) - Zope on ISP account (newbie)

Greetings, I am new to Zope and Python. I want to run Zope on my ISP account (WolfeNet.com) which uses Apache 1.0.3 on DEC OSF1 dune V3.0 358.78 alpha operating system. I have Python and Zope running but the ISP balks at passing authentication info to Zope, saying it is a security breach for them. Any ideas? I am running it on my NT Server box at home and love it, but want it on my live site. Thanks, Robert Allyn

There doesn't have to be a point, it's just coooool. :^) One other interesting area for Zope...*if* we ever get of our butts and finish the import/export stuff, and if we actually went so far as to have some notion of *replicated* folders, then you could effectively check out your information onto your CE doo-dad, work offline using the local Zope, then update when back online. Of course, until we make some progress on our previous promises, you should take all this with a grain of salt. BTW, the active projects here right now are: o Finishing updates of the Frame documents (that is, Zope Manager's Guide, DTML manual, and reworked-Aqueduct Manager's Guide) o Zope-Medusa (which includes the FTP work) o WebDAV o DCOracle release We are swamped with a move to bigger offices starting next week and more hiring, but we are making good progress. --Paul

- How to register an object?

Hello, there are documents at zope.org that say I can publish an object, say 'billy', and invoke its methods with a url http://my.site/billy/my_method How can I register an object in Zope? I would expect object registration to work like external method registration, and indeed, there is an extension in the contributed code section which introduces 'External Objects' in Zope, but it doesn't work for me. Isn't there a standard way in Zope to do this? Thank you Stefan

I've been debating whether to mention this, because I don't want to encourage premature expectations, but I've got a modest Zope hello world example working with Python CE. - What's the point? Two purposes are served by allowing Zope to run on a CE device. First, apparently there *is* a market for embedded web server devices. It sort of makes sense. Why shouldn't you someday point your browser at your telephone/answering machine, network laser printer, VCR, etc. ? For evidence of the potential market, check out: http://www.intrinsyc.com/products/rainbow/index.html Second, and of more immediate concern to me, is that Python CE programmers desperately need a way to write simple user applications. Running a Zope application via Pocket Internet Explorer may be a reasonable short-term solution. Even for P/PC users (where Pocket IE is unavailable) it should be possible to use something like ProxiWeb to access Zope. - What's the problem? Everything appears to work okay with the a network card plugged in and the CE device connected to the network. ZopeHTTPServer serves its data to its local IP address. When the network card is removed, however, the socket stuff does not want to run on 127.0.0.1. I've yet to discover if this is a CE problem or just the Python CE implementation of the socket module. Do other Win32 programs have this problem? I'll be busy with other work for a while, but if anyone wants further information please send me email. Jim, Amos, thank you very much for your immediate answers. Things have become less foggy already. One thing that took me quite long to figure out, even though it's explicitely mentioned in the docs is that the Publisher explicitely extracts the argument names from the code objects of python functions. Isn't it a little dangerous to rely that much on python's internals. (Of course I see that solutions which stay inside the language's boundaries are much clumsier, e.g. would force all published functions to be f(**args). I don't want to start an extensive thread with this question, maybe it has been discussed in the bobo list already.. regards, stefan

- ANN: AutoMessageDialog patch

When editing files via the web in Zope, pressing the Change button gives you a dialog saying "Your changes have been saved", after which you get to click Okay to continue working. If you work by editing/saving/reloading the same page iteratively, this can get tedious. This patch creates a AutoMessageDialog object. It functions just like the tradional MessageDialog, but it *times out* after a couple seconds, sending the user to the next page. The AutoMessageDialog is installed in the edit-document page, but no others, and the timeout is defaulted to 2 seconds.
