You need to use python code either in a product or in External method to get content with httplib from external website. I remember seeing that there were some products with this functionality that you could use, but it is not something that is in TAL as a readymade feature. -- -huima

Rewrites themselves are not something that are absolute evil, but rather necessity in certain times and places. And I for one agree that there is and has been for long - a need for better version of Zope. Zope 2 has been great because of the ecosystem of products and tools that have helped a lot of people to get fast starts into developing applications before the Z-shaped learningcurve has punched in - and developer has had to cry for gods, gurus or both. For Zope to be a viable development tool and platform for web applications, transition to Zope 3 is a must - since the benefits of Zope 2 as a platform are running short while new tools and frameworks without the baggage of history get more and more developers to join in and commit to their mindsets. There are extremely smart people and good programmers working on Zope 3 to make it a better tool for developers. Every time I see presentation about the progress I get excited about the possibilities and wait for the possibility to run Plone in Zope 3 and develope applications with Zope 3 patterns, without Zope 2 cruft. But I am a practical developer and not looking forward spending my time with learning something that will not fly or will for ever be a minority player. I want to stand on the shoulders of giants and use robust components and frameworks made by people that are smarter than me. I have faith in the people putting their time on Zope 3, and I have faith on the possibility to make the transition to Z3 in a fashion that does not alienate those that matter: developers. http://www.plope.com/Members/chrism/zope3_dilemma#comments -- -huima

Mailing List Update
by Andrew Sawyers 24 Jun '04

24 Jun '04

List Updates: FYI to everyone, we're working on cleaning up the lists and the noise that has/is making it through onto the lists. Please be patient, as all of the issues are not yet known. Several items which have been recently added are much strong anti-spam rules and header and body checks to stop virus attachments at the MTA. We appologize for any inconvience, but are committed to resolving any problems with the lists. Thank You, Andrew Sawyers -- Zope Corporation Software Engineer (540) 361-1700

problem with acquisition
by John Hunter 24 Jun '04

24 Jun '04

I have a zope containment hierarchy base/somefolder/myobj base/other base, somefolder, myobj, and other are all instances of a MyFolder class which is derived from Folder. MyFolder is a simple extension of Folder that limits the allowed meta classes. I would like to acquire the 'other' folder from a myobj instance using the python API. Ie, I have a class method in which I need to be able to do def somemethod(self, someinstance): otherFolder = acquisition_magic(someinstance, 'other') where I know someinstance is a MyFolder instance which is either base itself, is contained in base (possibly deep in the tree). Ie, I would like this method to work if someinstance is one of base, somefolder, or myobj. Since all of these instances derive from Acquisition.Implicit via ObjectManager, I think I should be able to do this. I thought from Acquisition import aq_get, aq_acquire, aq_parent def somemethod(self, someinstance): folder = aq_acquire(someinstance, 'other') would do it for me, but this raises an AttributeError when passed a myobj instance. Thanks! JDH zope 2.7
