Session Timeout?
by Erwin Ambrosch 01 Feb '04

01 Feb '04

Hi, I'm using sessions in 2.5.X but get not session timout. In the session_data object the value "Data object timeout value in minutes" is set to 20. But after 20 minutes of inactivity I can access the resource though. Only closing the Browser invalidates a session. What I is as follows: 1. Trying to get a session 2. If no session is available the user is forced to enter name and password. 3. If name and password are correct a new session is created for this user. Re: MOO vs Zope

And would it be logical to emulate > MOO-based technologies using Zope OFS as the database? Here's my two cents on this topic, just because MOO and Zope are the two coolest environments I've used in the past decade. What follows is probably not going to win any technical merit awards: At some abstract level, the MOO server and the Zope server can be considered equivalent, because they're both OO systems (both as databases and as message-handling servers). At this level, anything sufficiently OO would qualify -- you ought to try out a similar query over on the Squeak-Smalltalk list, where they also have totally OO-based web/netservers. The real difference is that MOO and Zope have been specialized for different kinds of tasks: Zope gives you the scaffolding of an object model that makes ton of sense for a "webmaster" kind of approach. MOO gave you an object model specialized for 'location'-specific real-time interaction. The extent to which these two systems have been specialized to different ends means they would in practice suck at each other's tasks. I remember in the mid-90s there were lots of projects trying to get the MOOserver to serve webpages, and it was a simple enough thing to do, conceptually (you pretend the browser is a 'player' and deal with it conversationally). But is sucked in practice, for reasons of speed and, to a certain extent, conceptual clarity: the metaphor only went so far before getting in the way. My expectation is that trying to get Zope to work as a real-time server would be similarly frustrating, just because you'd be working against the main current of what it has evolved into. The conceptual overlap in them that you point out here, though, is a very neat intellectual space, and I'd suggest you look into Squeak and Smalltalk, the current manifestation of the common ancestor of both MOO and Zope. Squeak is still green enough to be bent in pretty much any direction, so if you've got ideas about novel communications models, it's probably a more fruitful environment, just by virtue of having less of an established set of practices governing its trajectory. - John Maxwell http://thinkubator.ccsp.sfu.ca/People/jmax jmax(a)sfu.ca

Introduction to CMF
by John Poltorak 01 Feb '04

I have an idea that I need to get familiar with CMF, but am not really sure what it provides. Where would I get a clearer picture of what it gives me and how easy it is to set up. I've looked at cmf.zope.org but am still no clearer. -- John

Re: [Zope] importing an existing python module into Zope python script? FIXED!
by Sean 31 Jan '04

31 Jan '04

Rachel, Glad you got it working! One thing that occurred to me is that your imported module probably will not auto refresh, except when the code in in the GlobalModules directory is changed. I think the auto refresh thing just checks the file dates on the files in the product's directory. The solutions that occur to me are: 1.) Move your code into that directory so that Zope sees it all as part of the same product (maybe a symbolic link would work for this?) -- 2.) write a script that "touches" the wrapper file whenever you save changes to your other code. -- 3.) edit the Zope code such that it auto refreshes every time, rather than just when a file has changed (this would cause things to run slower). -- or 4.) You could just click the refresh button every time before you test. 4.) might just be the best option, as this will also display errors in your code when it can not refresh. When Zope fails to auto refresh, do to an error in code, it just happily runs the old code - this can lead to some frustration when you get used to it refreshing for you, and then can not understand why the new code you just wrote isn't doing anything new. Cheers. --Sean > > Message: 13 > Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 16:52:35 +0000 > From: Rachel Willmer <rachel_lists(a)willmer.org> > Subject: Re: [Zope] importing an existing python module into Zope > python script? Customizing Error pages?
by Alec Munro 31 Jan '04

31 Jan '04

Hi List, I'm moving a static HTML site to Zope, and one of the results of this is that many, many links are changing. What I'm looking for is someway to catch all NotFound Errors, and at the very least, display a small explanation regarding our upgrading, with a link to the root of the new site. What I would like at the most would be to have a script that would check what URL they came in on, consult a translation table, and put up a page with the new link, and an auto refresh (part of this would be some kind of meta tags to tell search engines that the address had changed). Another handy thing would be logging all these errors, as well as their referrers, so I could go through and contact webmasters who have linked to us. Basically, what I need is someway to direct all notfound errors to a script. Thanks, Alec Munro

importing an existing python module into Zope python script?
by Rachel Willmer 31 Jan '04

31 Jan '04

This *must* be a FAQ, but I haven't found the answer anywhere despite all day looking... I've got an existing python module with a large amount of code in it which I want to use both inside Zope and outside in existing python programs. The module is still under development so will change frequently. Two burning questions: a) How do I get access to the module within Zope ? b) What do I then need to do to keep the versions in sync? As far as I can see, I have at least 3 alternatives to question (a). i) Copy it all into Zope, each function as a separate Zope python script (Ugh! and this then makes keeping it in sync outside Zope pretty darned difficult...) ii) Keep the module as-is and add an External Method in Zope for each function that will be called from a Zope script. Pretty awful but do-able. But then I think I need to do something else in the Zope Management Interface each time I change the module? Is that right? iii) Rewrite it all as a Zope Product? There must be an easier answer that has eluded me to date.... Any answers appreciated... Rachel

Localizer Install Problems
by Patrick Gilmartin 31 Jan '04

31 Jan '04

For both Zope 2.7.0-rc1 and Zope 2.7.0-rc2, the installation of Localizer Version 1.1.0a2 renders Zope ZMI inoperable on Windows XP. This is not true with Zope 2.6.4-rc2. Localizer Version 1.1.0a2 loads fine. I went back Localizer 1.0.1 and installed this on Zope 2.7.0.rc2 without problems. on Windows XP. I have not tested this on Linux yet, but this will be my task tomorrow. Has anyone had similar problems on Windows XP, NT, 2000, or 2003. Thanks in advance. Patrick Gilmartin
