Hi guys: I've got a new version of the Product API Tutorial on-line at: http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Reference/Tutorial So now you can read it without downloading the whole thing. Of course, you can still download it along with sample files and a completed sample Product at: http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Reference/ProductTutorial.tar.gz The tutorial has been updated a little to clean up language and add some discussion of project requirements and analysis, and now comes with an HTML as well as a text version. I'm still looking for criticism, so send it on in. Have fun, and have a happy new year! -Amos

It isn't complete, but Amos is working on documenting some more of the features (e.g. mailto and relative URLs, footnotes, etc.) For more examples of stuff written as StructuredText, take a look at the module docstrings in a lot of the code. Jim particularly writes his stuff as StructuredText. Also, for a *gargantuan* example, take a look at Amos' all-singing, all-dancing Tutorial.txt file in the Product sampler from yesterday. To use it in Zope, create a Document, say SomeDoc.txt and refer to it from the HTML version of the doc. For instance:    For those of you that want to know *why* you might like StructuredText, here are my reasons: o Much, much easier to write than HTML o You can author something usable in an email, in a README file in a distribution, or as HTML o Emacs text-mode makes working with it a breeeeze I write just about everything as StructuredText these days. There are caveats though: o not surprisingly, we haven't done a good job of documenting it o it has some quirks that can make it misfire on the HTML o you sometimes finding yourself not wanting to live within its confines o requires you to use the object database (no, just kidding :^) So, chalk it up as another option at your disposal. Ronan-- Apache 1.2.6's mod_rewrite doesn't work for passing authentication headers. Hello, I've a problem with Zope 1.0.9 (source distribution) with authentication. I'am using Apache 1.2.6 from a RedHat 5.1 distribution with the standard configuration files plus the the rewrite Rule in httpd.conf : RewriteEngine on RewriteLog /etc/httpd/logs/rewrite.log RewriteLogLevel 9 RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule ^/Zope/(.*) /home/httpd/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi/$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] For testing, i've installed Zope under the /home/httpd/Zope-1.9.0-src and a link with /home/hhtpd/Zope.lnk Zope.cgi is in the cgi-bin directory The URL //mymachine/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi gives the welcome page The URL //mymachine/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi/manage asks the superuser name and the password but it faills The URL //mymachine/Zope/manage asks the superuser name and the password but it faills. <FLAME> Maybe it's just me, but there seem to be a lot of people who don't "get" why ZOPE is what it is, and are asking for it to be something it isn't. It's an OBJECT publishign system, not a file publishing system. If all you want is a bunch of files sitting in a directory that are scripted, use PHP or some such... you'd loose all inheritance, attributes and encapsulation, but that is what it sounds like you want... We don't need to waste a TON of bandwidth trying to ask why ZOPE is something it can't be... it can pretend to be a few things, but after a point it's a "OBJECT PUBLISHING ENVIRONMENT", which has great benefits and some paradigm shifts... If this isn't what you need/want, move on, keep going. If you can use ZPublisher without the POS, go for it, that is the point is it not? But if you can't use ANY of it because of the paradigm, then it's time to move on. This is like sitting around complaining to Guido that Python really needs to be Perl, and why can't he make it Perl... Paradigm change? Get it? FWIW, my last major web project was all driven out of Illustra without a single file in the file system, anywhere, and we had great success, and none of these problems. We'd have built it on Zope if it'd existed, or we'd known about Principia. - Requirements for a project development system

I realize that my previous message was slightly inflammatory. In an effort to be constructive, here is my minimum set of requirements for any project development system: 1. The source code should be represented as plain ASCII files. 2. All required actions must be automatable. Corollaries to requirement 1: you can edit source files with your favorite editor, diff them, and store them in your favorite source code control package. By "source code" I mean all the information you create for your project: C, Python, HTML, documentation, whatever. If there is meta-data that is required to make your project work, it should be stored in a human-readable form as well. An example of this might be permissions on files, which would be stored in the form of a Makefile rule that sets the permissions.. Corollaries to requirement 2: you must be able to build and maintain your project with command-line tools. Being able to use a GUI or a web page to do things is great, but there is no substitute for the UNIX way. Windows NT is a good counter-example to this rule. Here are some examples of project tasks that are facilitated by these basic two requirements: - I want to be able to take a snapshot of my whole project that I can roll back to at a future date. - I want one team of people to work on part of the project independently without clobbering what another team is doing. - I need to look at the diffs between yesterday's version of the project and today's version to figure out what person X did. - I want to set up an automated task to check out the latest version of the project from source control and build it on a test machine. Having said all this, there are times when I break my own rules. I am using a GUI builder right now that creates a binary file describing the UI component layouts for a window. I'd rather it represented the data in an ASCII format, but it's sufficiently useful that I'll put up with it. Also, each window is stored in a separate file, so that tends to limit the possibility of two people needing to change the same file at the same time. Your mileage may vary, of course. But I have found these principles to be useful. --Curtis

- Copying Zope objects programmatically

Continuing on my channeling, I'm now trying to let users enter a selected ID; a folder named with that ID would then be created and set up. Creating the folder in DTML is easy:  I can even set a property on the newly created folder:  (Incidentally, these expression lines are getting awfully long. Is there any way to insert newlines in them?) However, I can't figure out how to create a new index_html object whose content is a duplicate of another default object; the third argument to the manage_addDocument() is never right.  _['default_user_page'].data doesn't work. str(_['default_user_page']) creates the page, but it also replaces < with <, so the DTML on the resulting page doesn't work. How do you get the contents of the Document object without it being escaped? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Should this sort of thing be implemented as an ExternalMethod? -- A.M. - namespace problem

The following DTML does not work:  <p>foo found!   <p>foo inserted!   It barfs with a NameError on foo. If I change the #call to a #with and use that to enclose the #var foo, then it works. I'd like to suggest that the description of the _.namespace function in the DTML reference include the return value (ie. "it returns a new namespace to be used in a #with" or somesuch). Given that the #call and _.namespace combination aren't going to do what I want to do, how can I do it? I've also tried REQUEST.set() but couldn't get that to work at all. Richard
