- Multiple database files

I was thinking of some of my development problems with Zope -- for example, it's difficult to work on code at home, tar it up, bring it to work and change it some more, take it home again ... -- and realized that being able to split up the object database into multiple files could help. Imagine if you could have several Data.bbb files, each holding some subset of the database's objects. This might be done by specifying into which file an object goes; the object's children go into the same file, unless they're explicitly moved into another file. That would let you put changeable, irreplaceable data like user folders, user settings, etc. in one Bobobase file, and static things like DTML pages into another file. Updating to a new version of the DTML would then require shutting down the Zope server, replacing the Bobobase file with a modified version, and restarting; the user settings would be unaffected by the change. Disclaimer: I haven't looked into the implementation at all, and have no idea if this is trivial, painful, or completely impossible. -- A.M. You can use DTML scripting to set HTTP Response headers - it sounds like you just need to add a snippet of DTML in with your call to the counter which sets appropriate caching headers for the client (note that "appropriate" varies by client -- you'll probably need a few different cache headers to ensure that most clients will understand one of them). I'm having a slight proglem with a simple counter... I've made an external method that increments a Folder property and then returns it, which I use to maintain a hit-count on my main page. The problem is, that this doesn't work like with the simple web page/cgi-solution I had before. Then it would update the count once for each session where you visited the page, and using a cached version of the page the rest of the time. Now, it counts every time you look at the page, and gives an unrealistically high hit-count... Is there a simple way around this, or do I have to start tracking who has visited? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, we're using Bobo-2.1.2 with Document Template 2.1 for an online publishing application (german legal text -- announcement for public beta will follow soon), and we run into an interesting PROBLEM: When downloading HTML documents generated by Bobo using document templates, Netscape Navigator sometimes/often misses the end of the document. Seems like it doesn't wait for the end of the transmission. If this happens within a html tag, the document displayed ends with the beginning of this tag. The frequency of this error appears to depend on the length of the individual document and, even more, on the transmission speed (on a 100MBit LAN it's very rare, on a 64KBit ISDN line it happens _very_ often). We observed it ONLY with Netscape 3.x and 4.x on WinNT and on Linux. MS Internet Explorer and Netscape 2.01 didn't show the problem so far (neither did lynx :-). Now it seems we found a SOLUTION: In CGIResponse.py, class Response, method __str__, the content-length header is set to len(body). After removing this line of code, the problem seems to be gone without visible impact on functionality. This leaves us with some QUESTIONS: 1) Can anybody confirm this error? Any experiences with other browsers than Netscape? 2) Is our fix safe? Will it work with other content types than text/html? Bet it won't... :( 3) If this is _not_ a Bobo/DT bug, what could we be doing wrong? 4) [optional] Does this mean that Netscape gets a wrong (too short) content length and reacts correctly, while MSIE just ignores this header and listens until </HTML>, or is the content length correct and Netscape is buggy, or what? - Simple redirect?

I'm having some trouble fiddling with Apache (one over which I really have no control -- using only .htaccess and the like) and would like to do things differently... I would like to run a ZopeHTTPServer and redirect all HTTP requests from one directory under the Apache server to the ZopeHTTPServer. I do not have (and will not get) mod_proxy available, and mod_rewrite only seems to change the URL shown in the browser no matter what options I feed it. So, what I wondered was -- can a simple redirect mechanism be made as a cgi-program, for instance in Python? I could get the URL, fetch the info from the other server and return it... The problem, I guess, is getting environment information (with, among other things, authentication headers) on to the Zope server... Is there some simpler way? I guess I could use pcgi, but I would still want Zope itself to lie on a different machine... The status on this: we have written the first draft of the architecture document that moves everything atop Medusa and describes how the Medusa handlers and the thread pool will match up. And just because we provide an FTP publisher doesn't mean people have to turn it on. But many people _will_ want to turn it on. Maybe they are doing development behind a firewall or on their disconnected laptop. Or maybe they want to support all the market leading tools such as Dreamweaver that run on platforms that don't even have SSH file transfer, much less free SSH file transfer, much less SSH integrated into the tool. ("OK Mom, close Dreamweaver, launch SSH, and generate your RSA key. Attach it to an email and I'll add it to your authorized_keys file...") If you're doing Emacs, meaning you're smart :^), you'll get bulk copy, grep, the wonderful world of Ediff, and all other whizbang things that work with ange-ftp/EFS. And it will be more palatable than normal FTP because you won't be storing accounts in /etc/passwd. It still won't be paradigm-shifting like WebDAV will be. But that's OK. TEXTAREA must go and must go soon! For those of you that don't like the above scenario, THAT'S FINE, don't use it! This is open source, after all. Create something different, send us some patches and distributions and let's talk. Just DON'T respond by discouraging these initiatives. Respond by encouraging other initiatives. --Paul
