The FTP session could strip off and cache the cookie info on behalf of the user. Upload to Filesystem

Hello, I am currently in the process of deciding whether to use Zope or PHP for a web based editing system. While browsing over the Zope email archive I saw some announcements/request of a filesystem based upload system, but not really any replies. What is a good way to upload Files via a web interface to the Zope machine's (not necessarily accessible from Zope after upload) filesystem. We want to serve Real Audio files from this box, too, but i don't think storing hundreds of Real Audio Files in the object store is a good option (and wouldn't work anyway, because the RA Server needs physical access to the RA files). Any possible solutions? thanks Oliver

Is there a way to force a commit ??

I have noticed others asking questions similar to this, but have not seen an answer. It seems that it is not possible to change the properties of a newly cloned zClass within the same DTML in one click. Common sentiment seems to think that the newly created object is not yet set down or commited. Is there any way to force a commit, maybe using dtml-try, or an external method, or something? Have a way to map a version to a port. A special version object that lets you specify an ftp port. All objects accessed are those in the version.

Question about ZODB and threads

Hello Zopistas - Suppose we have a persistent object registered with ZODB which has a list attribute contents. According to ZODB rules we should treat mutable attributes as immutable, but what happens if we are crazy enough to treat them as mutable and do things like: self.contents.append('crazy') Had we treated it as immutable we would have done something like: tmp=self.contents tmp.append('not so crazy') self.contents=tmp in which case tmp is local to the thread and the last statement triggers ZODB's thread-safe transaction mechanism. However in the first case ZODB is unaware of the modification. This was not a problem before the concurrent ZODB, but I am not sure what would happen if two threads call this function simultaneously. Any ideas? (No it is not a theoretical question. Such a construct can be very useful in many situations where you might want to store data in memory temporarily.) Happy Zopping Pavlos

I just came across this post of yours. Curious: Have you guys looked at ternary search trees [1] as an alternative dictionary algorithm? Compared to B-trees and their variants, ternary trees are extremely space-efficient, and lend themselves greatly to partial searching -- such as finding words starting with a certain substring, or pure wildcard matches -- and nearest-neighbour searching. They're not just simple in structure, they're lightning fast, too: Searching for a string of length k in a tree containing n strings will require at most O(log n+k) comparisons. A semirecent article [2] explained the concept in detail. I've successfully employed them and can personally verify their usefulness and speed. Because they're light, the I/O required to process searches is negible compared to other methods such as hash tables or binary trees (and their variants). Unlike binary trees, non-recursive search functions are just as simple to write as recursive ones (the only stack space theoretically needed is the search string and your node representation); balancing is generally not needed, although it is possible to enforce; finally, ternary trees have low overhead for insertion and successful searches. Ternary trees get their names from having three children per node, contrary to the binary tree family, which use two. Each node contains a "split character" and three "low", "equal", and "high" child pointers. The split character is an 8-bit (or 16-bit UNICODE) character value. Let's say we store the words FOO, FRED, FRUIT, ZOPE, and BAR, in that order. The three built is thus (I use "." to denote a null splitchar): F /|\ B O \ | |\ \ A O R \ | | | \ R . E \ | |\ Z . D U | | | O . I | | P T | | E . | . Let's say we're searching for the word "FRUIT\0" (a terminating null character is used to avoid matching with stuff like "FRUITCAKE"; if we leave out the terminating null, this becomes a partial-match search). First, we find the root node, "F". It's equal to our starting character, so we increment our character pointer and go to the node's "equal" child, "O". Some very interesting ideas in there. Its a pigs breakfast just like most MS stuff but interesting anyway. I like the idea of using an SQL like language to query the heirachical DB.
