Using a DTML Method to render a DTMLDocument?

Ok, here's what I'm trying to do, let's say I have a bunch of DTMLDocuments that I want to be able to call various different DTMLMethod renderer's on. A poor example would be, a DTMLMethod that adds a header and footer to a DTMLDocument that doesn't have one. For example : MyDocument (DTMLDocument): <H1> Hello World </H1> -------------------------- MyMethod (DTMLMethod): <H1> MY HEADER </H1> <dtml-var this> <H1> MY FOOTER </H1> --------------------------- So when I call http://localhost/MyDocument/MyMethod I get back : MY HEADER Hello World MY FOOTER So far, so good. The problem is, when MyDocument has dtml in it, it does not render that dtml. For example if : MyDocument (DTMLDocument): <H1> Hello World </H1> <dtml-var someotherpage> --------------------------- When I call http://localhost/MyDocument/MyMethod I get back MY HEADER Hello World <dtml-var someotherpage> MY FOOTER So I actually see the dtml tag rather than the content of someotherpage. Is there away to do this in DTML? I have figured out a way to do it with an ExternalMethod (by manually calling HTML.__call__ on it). But I wonder if there is an easier way. tree tag and SQLMethod

Hello, I come back from a long travel in outer space... :-) I lost all my archives, and searching eegroup is a pain (still looking after 1 hour...) I remember one of you explaining how to get SQL Method result from a tree tag. At the time this clever guy did this, zope was not even 2.0.0alpha 1, so he couldn't add a howto page to www.zope.org Could someone explain how to do this. I've got something like this: sql_get_children(parent): SELECT key, parent, name FROM table WHERE <dtml-sqltest parent type=int> <dtml-comment>The top-level is parent=0</dtml-comment> view_hierarchy: <dtml-tree expr="sql_get_children(parent=0)" branches_expr="sql_get_children(parent=parent)"> <dtml-var name> </dtml-tree> However, it does not work :-( It raise a NameError on 'parent', which I guess it could get from the sql method result any idea? properties UI suggestion

(I am afraid I don't know what list to mail this to, so I would appreciate any redirection and "In the future..." comments) I have a suggestion for the next iteration of zope: in the properties view, zope has three columns: a check box, the property ID and the property VALUE. How about a third... the property TYPE. ... it would be very useful as I can't tell you how many hours I have wasted debugging code only to realize I had accidently set a property to STRING instead of INT.... Implementation questions for a new project

I have been playing around with Zope for a couple weeks now, and I figure that it is time to actually sit down and do some work. I have a few questions, but I am generally familiar with dtml (and I'm starting to learn python, too). So: For background: The project is CLASSic -- Classroom Integrated Computing **Note: This is NOT a general announcement of availability. While anyone is free to email me (van_lindberg(a)mail.com) if they would like to help, I intend to have some sort of working project to release. This is provided for background, more than anything else. I am building a set of tools for teachers that they can use to adminster their classes. I currently work as tech support in a university, and I see a lot of professors that would like to use the web to enhance their classes, but they are intimidated by the technical language. After having worked with a lot of different teachers with different skill sets, I think I understand their needs and the mental framework in which they operate. Once I have a useable product, I want to release it as free software. Initially, this product will only provide basic functionality: email, online gradebook, syllabus/schedule/calendar integration, discussion forums (think squishdot) etc. see http://www.blackboard.com/ for an example of the type. Later, I hope to integrate some more advanced functions, such as school administration, lesson planners, etc. While it is slightly different than what I am thinking, take a look at http://depts.washington.edu/catalyst/home.html for the basic idea, especially the method guides. Now, the questions: If I just haven't read the appropriate item, just a pointer would do. The root of these questions lies in my understanding of OO programming. For instance, I want a object ClassItem that has associated values that I can call. I'll try to explain with Java, since that is what I know best. If I had: class ClassItem{ String dueDate; String description; int ID; ClassItem(String date, String about, int objectNumber){ dueDate = date; ID = objectNumber; } } Then if I declared a new ClassItem Homework1("Dec 11","1), I could from the calendar say something like System.out.println(" Homework #" + ID + " is due " + Homework1.dueDate()); but from the syllabus I could say System.out.println(" The first homework involves " + Homework1.description()); A class would be built from a collection of ClassItems. Now the questions> First, how can I create that same sort of construct? Second, How do I fill it up with user-defined values? For example, in php, if I have it parse a form with the following html: <INPUT TYPE=TEXT NAME="name" VALUE="Joe Schmoe"> it gives me a variable $name that has the value "Joe Schmoe" that I could then call elsewhere. Can I do this with dtml? Or would it be better to go with pure python? Thnx, VanL

I have lurned to run gdb to get simple answers I can understand, or at least I believe I have :-) I runned: "file core" and got "core: ELF 32-bit MSB core file SPARC Version 1, from 'python'" Then I runned: "gdb python core" and I got: "Core was generated by `/usr/local/bin/python /export/home/bmatt/iPersonal/z2.py -D'. New beta of GenericUserFolder available for testing

I've uploaded a new beta of GUF , which I've fixed the outstanding authentication issues. This has (hopefully temporary) introduced a new limitation where things will stuff up if you create a GUF (using cookie authentication) inside an area already protected with cookie authentcation. Problem editing index_html in Zclass

I have an index_html DTML Method in a ZClass called ProfileClass, I am unable to open this method for editing in Xemacs. Here is the problem, I tried to open it with: /127.0.0.1:/Control_Panel/Products/Profile/ProfileClass/index_html but got a message that the file did not exist. I then opened /127.0.0.1:/ and changed "directories" until I got to /127.0.0.1:/Control_Panel/Products/Profile but when I looked at this listing ProfileClass was not marked as a "directory" so there was no way for me to cd to it. I tried moving the index_html method to Profile thinking that perhaps ProfileClass would acquire it from Profile, but it didn't work. Is there any way for me to edit this directly in Xemacs with EFS or will I have to open it in the Zope management interface and use cut and paste to enter it?
