Hi Zopers', I downloaded Zope and also Apache from their websites. I have installed both of the applications but cannot get my Zope manager working. Apache is installed correctly but I dont think the dhcpd.conf is correctly altered. When i attempt to browse to http://localhost:8080 nothing comes up. It cannot find the location/it doesnt exist. This is while i have both the Zope running in my taskbar and also Apache. Basically I want to use Zope to log helpdesk calls directly into an Excel Database for later printing. I am running my system which is a Pentium2-350 on Windows98SE. Any help would be appreciated as I have been told how good Zorp is and I am itching to get it working :) PLEASE help !! regards, Simon Black +61298085833 simon(a)warrantyworks.com

mod_cgi patch for webdav doesn't work

hi, I was very pleased to hear about the webdav patch for apache. (http://www.zope.org/Members/Brian/Misc/mod_cgi_webdav_patch.html) thanks brian. However, I have some trouble. How do I ... keep variable alive

I have used the site-contents example to list files in a folder. I now have the list as links - excellent. now none of these files have not got the standard header and footer set - to remedy this I would like to open a nominal file (say /viewer ) which only has three lines - the header and footer plus a <dtml-var > line which refers to the file I wanted to view in the first place. Clear? :-) So you will see that I am basically trying to ensure that a header and footer are wrapped round /every/ document every time. I want to modify the sitemap layout so that instead of opening the document, it opens /viewer but at the moment of opening viewer the original file path is a variable that is still alive and useable. Dunno how to do this and clues, pointers etc will be trully excellent. There may, of course, be a 100% better way of doing this already! I'm a Zope beginner. I'd like to surround text 'Hello' with <h1></h1> tags, if variable (not attribute) Size is equal to 'big'. Allaire has released a beta of ColdFusion 4.5 for Linux, and when 4.5 ships, it will be available fro Linux. Drawbacks to ColdFusion are that it is MASSIVELY EXPENSIVE, terribly unstable (on Windows and Solaris, at least, so there is no reason to expect any different on Linux), and as far as I can tell, there are no database drivers supported in Linux yet, since CF only uses ODBC, and the docs didn't seem to say that the current ODBC developments on Linux are sufficient for connectivity. Perhaps it has support for those dbs that are supported natively by CF in the NT environment (Oracle7, 8, and Sybase), but I am unsure. CF is a bit more mature in terms of feature set, but Zope is not far behind and rapidly catching up. Zope has a very nice object orientation mechanism that does not seem to be duplicated in any way by CF, but I could be wrong. I have very little CF experience. CF has some cool constructs that Zope doesn't have, but zope has some unique ones of its own. Besides, Zope is open source, supported by an awesome group of devoted developers (fanatics?), and is just generally cooler than anything else. Oh yeah. Zope is written in the coolest language I have seen in a long time, Python (Thanks Guido!). CF does have some nice features in its IDE that probably wont be matched by Zope in the very near future. It would be nice to do edits in an environment other than a TEXTAREA box in my browser, but I can wait. For the SQL novice, CF also has a query builder much like the one in MS Access. Products Similar to ZOPE?

I may be giving a presentation on Zope to our local Linux users group, and in an effort to be complete, and seem like I have researched other products well, I was wondering, what OTHER products are there that have similar featuresets to ZOPE? Including things like the version control, the database integration, and the scripting capabilities? I have looked around, and I can't seem to find anything that does. Am I just missing it? It seems like some products have some features, and other have others, but none have them all the features ZOPE has. Also, what, besides a Rapid Development GUI system, is ZOPE missing that these others have? Is ASP a competitor to ZOPE? PHP? Seems like these are both just plain scripting systems. new beta web site using/promoting zope

Hello all! I am working on starting a Linux and/or Zope user group in Alabama. I have created a zope demonstration web site using zope/apache. I would say that this site is early beta quality, but I would also say that it will never leave beta quality (the content is very rough). I would love to hear any thoughts on how to make the site better. I would also love to hear ideas on new products to implement in order to demonstrate zope. Oops! I am also interested in a problem tracking solution. I was thinking about using the ZRTChat product as a starting point to create something because I like the way the frames are seperated. I have some preliminary thoughts, but I do not know if they are valid or practical. 1. The upper and lower frames could be used for placing icons/links to functions such as open ticket, close ticket, search for information in all tickets and etc. 2. The middle frame would be used for displaying open tickets, closed tickets, individual tickets, returned items from a search and etc. 3. Each ZRTChat message would be like an entry in the log for tracking a problem. 4. There would have to be a method for generating new problem tickets/(ZRTChat objects) 5. more to be added if this is valid way to start. I have some questions about the above ideas. 1. Is this a valid way to start, or should something be created from scratch? 2. Is there a good reason not to use the zodb database to store all of the info from the problem tickets? (IOW: Should the data be stored in Postgres or MySql?) 3. How do you go about superclassing the ZRTChat to create new problem tickets? 4. How do you go about making the data items searchable? zope & fastcgi again

hi again i have successfully installed zope with fastcgi. how can i make the site accessable from http://www.mysite.com/ instead of http://www.mysite.com/zope this rewrite in apache wont work, because i think it rewrites the url and showeither error 404 if the file zope is not there, or shows the doc "zope" itself. FastCgiExternalServer /home/httpd/html/zope -host localhost:8999 -pass-header Authorization RewriteRule ^/(.*) /home/httpd/html/zope$1 [l] <Location /zope> Options ExecCGI SetHandler fastcgi-script </location> furthermore, accessing the site with http://www.mysite.com/x/ results in broken images and broken links since the base url changes, i think. e.g this is ok if i access thru http://www.mysite.com/zope/ index_html <dtml-var standard_html_header> <body>my <dtml-var title> <dtml-var "images.myimage.absolute_url()"> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> this is not, results in broken links, images. the folders images is there. <dtml-var standard_html_header> <body>my <dtml-var title> <img src="/images/<dtml-var myimage>"> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> the solution i see is hardcoding the extra reference, but i have to do all this for my pages and some products downloaded from zope.org. am i missing something? enlighten me oo gurus.. thks ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.kedai.com.my/kk Am I Evil?
