You have a good point, I belong to another list, PHP3, where the same discussion has been raging for months. The basic feeling there is that if the list was split, the 'experts' would leave thereby the questions on the list would be answered by 'less well informed humans' :). This would then 'force' the 'mere mortals' on the original list to migrate. Thereby creating the problem all over again. The PHP3 list btw has about double the traffic of this list. Recently, the list came up with a very simple method to make the list easier to digest. All posts should have a 'topic indicator', for example, all posts about installing should be marked as [INSTALL]. [Q] About sessions and Zope

Zope is surely a great system to develop dynamic html sites, and even a novice like me can learn how to use it. My problem is that I've got to be able to make users able to manage sessions in a transparent way: people who get in the site should open a session, create a folder, put there their material and leave to tehe site manager the task to verify what they sent and close the session. And all this should be done seamlessly by the user, possibly with a single form, without having the task to "click to add session", the enter the name, then go to the session and make ti active, create the folder and upload there the files... The main.dtml suggests me to present the user a form with the "manage_addSessionForm" button to press... then he can put the session name and click "add". So he automatically returns to the folder view, and that's not exacltly what "transparent to the user" means, understand me... So I guess I have to reprogram the routine that makes the form: instead of showing the folder it should automatically start the session and ask for a new folder to be created. The PROBLEM: where's that routine? Where's the script that makes the form? Where is it going when I select the "manage_addSessionForm" action? I ain't been able to find it, even with the "find" command, ain't got other ideas... I understand maybe this Q requires a bit of answer... if anyone wont' take this labour I can perfectly understand; otherwise: can someone point me a doc explaining all this? I've downloaded most of the docs in the Zope site, and I can dnload more... TIA! Max Murdock

Hi! After adding Database Connection to my folder I found that every time I started Zope the connection opened, so postgres forked. I cannot close the connection - even when I press "Close Database Connection" postmaster stays forked. Only when I shut Zope down postmaster close connection. I am pretty sure it is problem. What if posgres died while Zope is active? Will ZPygresDA restore connection? Who is responsible for the problem - Zope or Adapter? Can I setup a timeout, after which (if there is no activity) Adapter closes connection automatically and restores connection on next access? Backing up Zope's database?

Hi there, We're running Zope on an NT server here and the backup system (Arcserve) apparently gives an error when it tries to backup Zope's 'var' directory. I would like to have this succeed (and end up with a non corrupted database, of course :), so here are some questions: * is this perhaps fixed by Zope 1.10? I read something about Zope 1.9 not doing proper file locking on NT yet, so there is some difference here. * Is copying a database while Zope is running a good strategy? (probably not) * What other options are there? For instance, NT seems to be able to copy the var dir just fine, so perhaps a copy could be made that Arcserve could backup. Still, that database would be backuped while Zope is running, so perhaps this isn't a good idea. Thanks in advance, Martijn

Bug with DateTime.float method ?

I GOZ, I have a problem with the float method from DateTime module !! It seems that Linux and WIN32 platform(NT) do not give the same result. Is there an explanation? Wow! Thanks for all the replies to my query about preserving session variables. I rather like Christopher's idea about using a single SessionID variable. Most of the data in my application is in a database (SQL Server) and I could create a Session table with a sequential ID that would hold the values I want. I think I'll stick with the simple method, using the format www.server.com/zope/page_name?SessionID=1234. I'm still rather a Zope novice and my immediate priority is to get my web site up and running instead of becoming a Zope master... I'm using Zope with IIS and it does provide session tracking with a unique ID, but it requires the use of short-term cookies. I could pass the session ID from IIS to Zope (I think), but that violates my no-cookie goal. Similar to what someone mentioned somewhere in the thread, my goal is to keep the client side as simple as possible in order to minimize end-user issues. I prefer to do all the complicated processing on the server, which is completely under my control... Again, thanks for all the response. Jeff jeffniel(a)ix.netcom.com

count- of-by-one?

count- (statistic-name) seems to be of-by-one. [select_systems is a ZSQL Method]    This should return 41 [counting the rows displayed when a normal report is displayed]. It however returns 40. There is a default object in any user_folder called manage_users It handles managing users in the user folders. If you have manager privileges as a user, submitting the following form in the user folder will add a user to the folder. You could process these in DTML to remove the security. FYI: Zope Roadmap online

I just posted a News blurb on the site saying I've put the Zope Roadmap online: http://www.zope.org/Information/Roadmap This was an email I sent out on January 18th that tried to sketch out what we'd do over the ensuing two months. Fortunately I wrote the email in Structured Text :^) Anyway, looking back over it today, I'm pretty shocked to see that we are actually ahead of schedule.
