I only use a few of the components that go into Zope, so I find it too time-consuming to read this list closely any more because it's filled with tons of stuff I have no interest in. Zope is great stuff, but it's not for everyone. This someone is publishing objects using ZopeHTTPServer (I'll switch to ZServer eventually I imagine) and DTML. I'm not really interested in all the stuff in Ken's left-hand column. I thought this topic was brought up about a month ago. I was surprised to see the split hasn't yet occurred. Zope - NT- DBF

Hi, I'm just starting trying out Zope. I've downloaded and installed Zope-1_9_0-win32-x86.exe I works and I've started making changes to have a grasp on the capabilty. Now I would like to add "something" to make a dynamic page with data coming from a table (say a DBF file). Which "pieces" do I need ? I've heard something about Tabula or ZTable but there aren't present in the distribution (not even in1.10). Any hint ? P.S. There are so many things to take into account: interference of the client, interference of the network, getting enough clients involved, etc. Just for grins I logged into the zope.org site which is a PII-350, RedHat 5.1, and Apache. I ran a little Python script that requested a URL ten times in a row and measured the elapsed time. The URL was two hops into the site and is pretty dynamic (standard header/footer, sidebar menu computed from a Folder property, etc.). The elapsed time for ten requests was 1.3-1.4 seconds. This included connecting to Apache, which forked/fired up PCGI, which connected to Zope, which ran the requests and sent data back to PCGI, which read it off the domain socket and returned it to Apache, which returned it to my Python script. Just for grins I fired up a ZServer (Zope woven tightly with Medusa, no Apache). The elapsed time for ten requests dropped to 0.7 seconds! I'm just as surprised as the next guy by that. *If* it's true, it probably means that a mod_pcgi Apache module, or a switch to mod_fastcgi, is in the future. I did a test a while ago of our full-text search speed. On my laptop -- P166, 64 Mb, NT 4 -- I loaded a 24 Mb, 27,000 record copy of the Internet movie database into a Z Table (Tabula). I did a search that combined a keyword, year, and full-text searchterm (actor AND actress AND star). The search came back in under a second, formatting the first 20 of around a thousand matches. Anyway, none of these tests are rigorous. --Paul

Problems requesting SQL date fields

hiding tracebacks, and catching exceptions

The persistent-CGI version of Zope always seems to append tracebacks to error pages, and it makes for a messy-looking site. 1) is there any way of setting it so it sends these to web server logs (on stdout) and not to the HTML? 2)Is there any way of catching and handling exceptions from within DTML? --- Julian Morrison Programmer (Zereau Ltd)

Everitt's suggestion is good, but I suspect that you will probably have to write an External Method to automatically create and enter the session... Go to lib/python/Products/OFSP/Session.py and browse the source for the functions and their parameters. For what it's worth, we're working on weaving the capability deeply into Zope. That is, having roles of users whose changes must be reviewed before they are live or go into the site-wide catalog/index. We've done several rough versions of this for customers and for demos. Making it a general facility takes some thinking though. Also, you have to give the reviewers a productive interface for looking at a large amount of data quite quickly. I'm not completely convinced that we can come up with a single, general-purpose, works-with-all-objects facility for reviewing. If we can, though, it will pretty radically change website development, as it will apply to all content (calendar entries, HTML files, package uploads, used car listings, etc.) For now, your approach was a pretty good one. Take the people to a "login" page that automatically puts them in a session and perhaps authenticates them with the cookie-authentication from UserDB. --Paul
