Using Zope to generate static HTML

Is anyone working on a way to allow Zope to produce static HTML? I suppose the first response to this would be "Why?" Well, I love Zope, and I run it on my home machine, but I would also like to use it to manage web sites on machines that: 1. I don't directly control (or can't convince to run Zope) 2. Don't need the high level of dynamic content that Zope provides I also just like the way that Zope lets me construct the sites. I really like it as a tool. I've mentioned previously that I used Frontier before, and this was the primary way Frontier worked (until the most recent versions) -- code the pages, and then render them all to static HTML files. dave (amateur Zopatisti)

ZServer implements HTTP, FTP, *and* PCGI in the same publishing system (which also happens to be threaded now). Thus you *can* have one process listening simultaneously for connections of through Apache and FTP. --Paul

I'd much rather pull up pico and edit a static > configuration file. As mentioned later, Zope has a simple RPC mechanism -- it's called HTTP! ZClient is a package in Zope that automates this. It makes it convenient to connect to Zope and communicate with it from a scripting, non-interactive environment. As for going into a text file and making edits that affect the behavior of a number of Zope sites, this isn't very object oriented at all and is the kind of anti-Zen Zope strives against. Just my $0.02. If you want to edit a file and have it take effect in many Zopes, I don't think it should be too hard to make it do it. --Paul

Easy DTML question

Is there a predefined Zope variable to be used in DTML documents that contains the parameter part of a request. Say, the requested URL is http://somewhere:9674/folder1/folder2/object?param1=values1&param2=value s2 The variable URL0 contains then http://somewhere:9674/folder1/folder2/object But is there any for the param1=values1&param2=values2 part? I guess there's a Dictionary somewhere around, but I'm right now too busy to look for it. Thanks in advance Stefan

Getting started questions...

Hi, I'm new to Python (have done lots of Perl and Java on Unix though) and to Zope. I really like what I have seen of Zope, and would like to try and use it for my next project. The project has an interesting requirement, and I'm not sure how to accomplish it using the Zope Platform. I need to be able to package up the project and distribute it to multiple web servers automatically. If I did this project using cgi/perl and html I would probably just tar everything up and put it on an ftp server, which the other servers could check daily and update their code/html when a new tarball was available. How can I do something like this with Zope? I'd like to keep all my dtml/html/python code in normal text files, not in the object database. All the application data will be kept in some sort of SQL server, so if I can't eliminate the need for the object database entirely it would make my life easier. From what I've read on zope.org it sounds like I want Bobo, without Principia. In other words, I'd like to be able to walk over to a machine with my SQL database and apache installed on it and type: rpm -i zope-ver.rpm rpm -i zope-pcgi-ver.rpm tar xzf my_project.tgz Then be able to use my project from a web browser, without having to go in and configure it as a product or extention in Zope. Apache and ZServer

Hi all, I'm sat here thnking to my self, 'surely I could use the apache version of Zope for HTTP and use the ZServer for FTP'ing all content to it'. What this would mean is that for straight DTML content I could use, let's say Homesite, an HTML editor on Win32, that has it's own FTP site management facility. Sounds good to me. Can anyone see any problems with doing this? Would Zope care if both the Apache and ZServer parts were running side-by-side? TIA Phil
