PDF needs ExternalFile Object with byte-range capability?

I need to start serving large .PDF files from my ZopeHTTPServer. I'm thinking that I'd rather not put the actual data into bobo. Does anyone have an ExternalFile object? Also, I'd like to support byte-range serving. I'm thinking that I could modify Image.py File class, in index_html check to see if REQUEST has a byte-range heading, if so use a range on self.data, as in return self.data[startoffset:endoffset] I'd also have to set RESPONSE headers. I'm concerned about getLen and len methods. Are they used to set the content-length response header? If I set a content-length header myself will that over-ride Zope's default process of setting the length? Robert, I got similar error messages, because of the wrong permission setting of var directory. You can find some instructions in the install.txt. Whenever you get a "Sorry, an error occurred." message please look at the HTML source, there are some details in it. It may help you... Instance conversion

I am having trouble attempting to access a Confera Topic instance given it's string name. I can:   . . .   or:  . . .  noting that testConfera is a <Topic Instance at xxx> However, I can't figure out how to retrieve the Topic Instance given the string name 'testConfera'. I can get several different types of instances (such as <ResultSet instance at xx>, but not a Topic Instance. How to?? Thanks Kent

Method Context Control

How can I control the context within which the various built in methods execute? For example, I am using a tree tag in a document method to display subfolders in my global navigation. However, when this method is acquired by a subfolder, its context changes and it only lists the subfolders of the current folder. I want to force this method to execute within its original context in order to display the entire site structure regardless of the page being viewed. If this is not currently possible, I would like to suggest that a 'context' attribute be added to , with the default being 'context=here' (the current behaviour) and an additional value of 'context=self' or perhaps 'context=origin' being made available. Another possible value for a 'context' attribute might be 'context=parent' to move the context up one level in the hierarchy. What do you all think? Michael. P.S. I do not yet have the programming ability to accomplish this... so I cannot submit a patch.

Treating two seperate directories as ne package

Anybody have any experince combining two directories into one python package? As you suggested, I figured it would be a good idea to get the paths functional for command line testing before tackling the Apache issue. I think I may need a step-by-step walk-through of where the paths for pcgi-wrapper should point. I thought I understood 'em, but no matter what I do, the wrong python continues to execute. The following is what I've tried (with '--more-path--' pointing to my home directory): PCGI_EXE=/--more-path--/local/bin/python PYTHONHOME=/--more-path--/local/lib/python1.5: PYTHONPATH=/--more-path--/local/lib:/--more-path--/local/lib/python1.5:/--m ore-path--/local/lib/python1.5/site-packages: PCGI_INSERT_PATH=/--more-path--/local/Zope-1.9.0-src/lib/python:/--more-pat h--/local/Zope-1.9.0-src/pcgi: Regardless of any of the above, what is executed is always '/usr/bin/python'. This is only happening through Apache, not from the command line. hiding zope behind an apache proxy with mod rewrite

I want to hide zope on a internal site behind apache using mod rewrite and mod proxy of apache. The trick is that I want anything in /cgi-bin/ to go to apache, and anything else to go to Zope... but I want everything to appear to come from port 80 on the external server. I'm using ZopeHTTPServer. Here's what I've gotten apache to do (which seems to work OK): RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^/cgi-bin(.*) /cgi-bin/$1 [L] RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://some.internal.host:2734/$1 [P] But the problem I'm facing is that zope writes all the URLs to http://some.internal.host:2734/whatever, instead of what they are supposed to appear as (http://www.mycompany.com/whatever) How do I tell zope that I want the urls to look like www.mycompany.com, and not to the internal site? (Preferably only to the outside world; I'm happy with the inside world using the internal URL). I've also tried setting SERVER_NAME and SERVER_PORT when zope is started, and then defining something like: MyURL to http://: which is all well and good, but then how do I get Zope to use this as the base? Setting <base href=""> didn't appear to do the right thing.... I want stuff like URL0, URL1 etc to work. Or, alternatively, is there a better way to accomplish what I want? What it comes down to is that I want apache around to run stuff in /cgi-bin on port 80 on the master server (critical), but I want zope to serve the documents on port 80 on the master server. I don't want /cgi-bin/zope.cgi?whatever either on the URL if it can be avoided. One thought I had was to use wget or similar to do a recursive get on the entire zope site, and then publish staticly. Does this sound like a good idea? (sorry for the rambling email--i'm very tired =) -- Steve Farrell

Brad, (sorry about not quoting Brad, we're still in the throws of mail server hell) We've kicked around the idea of an ExternalFile object, and I started a small project that fizzed out. My question was where to draw the line, do we make it a simple pipe to one file, or a Folderoid object that 'mounts' a part of a filesystem into Zope? The first would be pretty simple, the second would be pretty hard, IMO. Out of curiosity, what would byte ranging buy you? Do some clients request ranges? I think I read about this in the HTTP 1.1 spec... Michel PS We used to use WorldSock on the ISP I worked at a few years ago, I chuckled a bit when I saw you on our list, cuz I'm familiar with your products like your getting familiar with ours. ;)
