Palm & Zope.

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone out there has done any work related to publishing documents written on a PalmPilot via Zope. The obvious route is to author structured text on the Pilot (memopad or a Doc file editor, preferably Doc to avoid the 4K limit of memopad) and upload that manually. I have two problems with that kind of setup: The first is the manual publishing of documents. Ideally, though the documents would be sent to the Zope server on Hot Synch. What folder they were published in could be dictated by the category of the document. My second problem is with structured text itself- with the lack of horisontal space the need to indent paragraphs to get headings is a pain. I'd prefer something similar to Emacs' outline mode which uses consecutive *'s at the beginning of a line to show it is a heading and what level it is. (Of course, writing the HTML tags on the Palm is an option, but that does beome very tedious.) So my questions are: 1) Has anyone written code to read Doc files and upload them to Zope. This shouldn't be very hard but I wouldn't want to duplicate existing effort. 2) How hard would it be to extend/modify the structured text module to do what I want? (I've been lurking long enough to hear about Z-Classes but I haven't learned enough to know whether that applies here.) Thanks in advance. If someone breaks into your Zope, all they can do is munge up some objects and maybe restart, but you can allways go in and roll-back the database to fix their damage. There is no way for a user to execute arbitrary code as the UID of the Zope process. FTP support works like a charm here, the only thing I would like it to do is traverse into ZClasses, and I'll be implimenting that sometime after the 2.0 final release. WebDAV is as complete as the RFC is, and works quite well with SiteCopy and with what parts of the spec MSIE 5.0 impliments, never used Netscape PUT but once and it worked then, but it's possible there are problems, I'd venture to guess they were netscape problems because I had a hell of a time getting Netscape publishing to work with Roxen about a year ago. Since Netscape publishing has left a bad taste in my mouth. The ZODB is fully transactional. This means that multiple object stores can be called a 'transaction' and if one doesn't happen, then none of them do, or if one is undone, they are all undone. Essentialy transactionality allows you to take a group of operations and make them one atomic operation. Many higher end relational databases support the notion of transactions on records, Zope supports the notion of transations on objects. Transactions are most obviously a benefit for staged development, and they are the mechanism behind versions, which allow you to work on a personal 'copy' of the database and only commit the changes you've made when you are sure the whole thing is working, thus 'commiting' the transaction. Getting Zope to work with apache can be tricky, different versions of mod_rewrite either want or don't want a trailing slash after Zope but before the regexp, Directory attributes like ExecCGI must be specified etc. Apache is a very good, big multi-knobbed beast. Another option is to check out Zap, the precompiled and configured Zope+Apache for Linux. A Public Standing Ovation!

I would like to personally and publicly give a standing ovation to everyone at Digital Creations for the magnificent job they did at LinuxExpo this past week. This includes all of the preparation that went on pre-show (for quite a long period), and not just those brave souls who talked their voices out, and demoed their hearts out. I had reasonably high expectations before the show, but they were greatly exceeded in every possible dimension. Every individual at DC had an exceptionally strong personal presence with individuals, corporate types, the media, etc. The energy was contagious. Not just for DC, but even a few of the surrounding booths seemed to feed off of the energy in the DC booth. Paul uses the word "gravity" to describe some of the general momentum at DC. The word is perfect to describe how a much higher percentage of folks were "drawn in" (gravity?) to the DC booth than to the average booth at LinuxExpo. The demos were (as you have heard before) fantastic. The amazing thing about the demos is that they conveyed very clearly, in roughly 10 minutes, some extremely powerful concepts. Most people got it (perhaps after asking a question or two :-). This is a really hard thing to do, and again, the DC crowd should be congratulated not only for building the software to allow these seminal ideas to be realized, but for distilling all of the amazing things they could have demonstrated down to a handful of cohesive and coherent relatively simple operations that encapsulated the essence of Zope, the Portal Toolkit, etc. Paul gave a speech on Open Source and Business on Saturday morning. It was attended by nearly 100 people. No one left early (I didn't attend any other talks, but I heard that it was quite common to have a number of early leavers). They gave him a very nice ovation at the end, and easily a third of the attendees hung around afterwards to exchange cards with Paul and me. P.S. And, in the spirit of the Python community, immediately after hitting deliver, I'm leaving for the seven hour drive home after an exhausting and exhilirating week :-)

different content from 9673 and CGI version of database!

Hi all, This is weird, I have a Zope server running on port 9673 on a machine. I also have an Apache rewrite rule that starts up a pcgi_publisher.py process. The rewrite rule points to the right cgi and the Apache web server logs show that things are happening. Can anyone give me a clue as to what stupid thing I've done now? (sigh).
