Our plans for XML are MUCH bigger than just a tacked on syntax, and XMLDocument is just the beginning of what you'll see in the coming months. We specifically avoided using an XML namespace syntax. As for whether it will change, I SERIOUSLY doubt it, as: * It's already been adopted by internal projects * It's been adopted by OTHER projects * Documentation is being updated to reflect this There's no huge gain to go to <z-foo> rather than <dtml-foo> other than a few saved characters. The larger gain was moving away from SSI syntax, because this has allowed us to teach the syntax to editors like Alpha and GoLive. This discussion should have happened a month ago before we committed the new syntax out of "experimental" stage, but it is no longer experimental. As for new renderers, well, *personally* I think there are too many syntaxes as it is:  <dtml-var foo--> %(foo)s or some such :-) Over the long term, I suspect that the SSI syntax will be deprecated, but not until we can provide a good program to convert everything to the new syntax. WARNING: Zope 2.0b2 considered harmful to ZClasses

Gang, Well, this is unusual, but unfortunately ZClasses seem to be largely broken in beta 2. How this happened we're not sure, and we sat and tried to fix it as quickly as possible, but the problem seems to be quite deep, and not due to any recent single change. What this means is that if you're using ZClasses you shouldn't even *think* about using Zope 2.0b2. This would be a bad idea. To prevent problems, I'll be removing it from the web site. The new DTML syntax

Am I the only one who does not take particularly kindly to the new DTML syntax? Well, I guess I might be. :) Before you bring forth the lynching implements, though, hear me out. In my opinion the number one problem is that the word "dtml" detracts from readability (as does the fact that the new syntax is visually less distinguishable from HTML or XML, but I guess that as we're dealing with SGML-like markup languages we can't really avoid that). When I think "if", I want to type "if", not "dtml-if", and consequently I typically end up writing "if", backtracking a bit, typing "dtml-" and then going on from there. That's just me, I guess. But the point is, the inclusion of "dtml-" spins my mind through too many connotations. If I had to type "html-" before every HTML tag, the same thing would happen. It would be a pain. Since control characters (<, >, :, # and so forth) do not carry the baggage of mental associations, they are more efficient, and that's why the old "<!--#" sequence still comes easier to my mind than the new syntax. Another, possibly more powerful argument is that the new syntax is essentially backwards: The actually "command" or "directive" doesn't start until 7 characters into the tag ("<dtml-"). To match one dtml-if against its closing tag, the mind must visually match a whole 7 characters ("dtml-if"), which is awkward. More than that, psychologically a sequence of characters such as "dtml-if" is much less efficient for pattern matching than just the sequence "if", especially if we consider the multitude of DTML keywords: They all share the common prefix "dtml-", making them variations of a spelling rather than separate, mind-sortable entities. The fact that the closing tag slash -- as in "</dtml-if>" precedes the "dtml" part actually _forces_ your brain to process the whole string, as opposed to just honing in on the "if" part. I don't know about you, but my mind sifts through a list such as if in var else unless sqltest call must faster than dtml-if dtml-in dtml-var dtml-else dtml-unless dtml-sqltest dtml-call Imho, Cold Fusion's CFML syntax does one notch better than DTML because it only devotes two characters ("CF") to distinguishing Cold Fusion tags from other markup, so you have keywords such as "cfquery", "cfoutput", and so on. Easily recognizable, short, sweet, easy to type. On the other hand, it uses a proprietary syntax for in-place variable insertion (eg., "#Name#" inserts the variable Name), so it's not all bliss. While I realize this stuff is somewhat subjective, from a technical viewpoint my opinion is that we're not there quite yet. ./start problem

Hi. I just installed Zope on another machine after using it for a while on another machine. Any ideas? It seems to hang after the last line. Ryan

Serious bug in beta 2

After installing beta 2, I tried adding some ZClass instances, but I was unable to add any. Then I tried making a test Product with a test ZClass using the default data.fs. ZServer and multithreading

I'm using ZServer to publish my own set of Python objects. Eventually, I plan to move this to a full product, but I haven't had a chance to yet, and things seem to be working the way I have them setup. I know that Zserver is multithreaded. My question is what does that mean for my code? I need to have multiple threads of execution occuring simultaneously, as some of the objects perform rather lengthy computations. Is this automatically handled by the Zope framework (sounds surprising, but I'd certainly take it :-) If not, what types of things need to be done to my code to allow multiple threads?
