Sorting ZCatalog search result "table"

Hello all, I'm currently stumped with this and I'm hoping someone else might have found a way to do what currently seems...impossible. I've got a database of zclasses with month (of the year) as one of it's properties. (in a propertysheet of course). The thing is, the instances are added in no monthly order. New instances could be in any month. As it is now, the blank search form returns a table (over a few "pages") of entries which _seem_ to be in order of creation. (intantiation?) How do I sort the search results that come out, by month, instead? I suppose everyone knows this, but the zope.org pipermail archives are down. As egroups has about the worst possible per-message navigation facility known to mankind, I hope it goes back up soon....

Zclass nonfolderish?

After reading Amos' ZClasses Tutorial, my understanding is that you are required to subclass the "Object Manager" base class to create class instances that are folderish. However, even if I leave the base class blank when creating a ZClass, instances of the class present themselves as folderish (e.g. if I visit /myClass/manage, I am presented with a management interface that allows me to add objects "into" myClass). Is this proper? How do I create a ZClass which is not folderish?

HTTP_ACCEPT is definitely unreliable - in fact I often wonder why they waste bandwidth with image/gif etc. when they just go and tack '*/*' on the end... :^) There has been some recent discussion on the list of some kind of 'supports' database that would let you figure out client capabilities, but I don't know if anyone ran with that... Check the article in the Sept. 20 issue of Infoworld. It is the Enterprise Toolbox column by Maggie Biggs. Zope is mentioned (first :-) as a prime example of Linux working in the mid-tier server space. That should generate a few hits... Don't know the on-line URL. Chris

zcatalog/zclass problem.. help!

I've searched the mailing list in vain trying to find someone with this same problem... Here tis: I've created a ZClass named "News Item", which is, strangely enough, a news item. It has a class, newsClass, that has a property sheet, Properties, upon which properties have been developed... including "news", "subject", "owner", "date", "department" and a few others. I've tweaked the methods within this zclass to give me the sort of actions I want upon add and edit, etc. It's based on ZObject and ZClass_for_Catalog_Aware. ZClass_for_Catalog_Aware was the first base class when it was created. Instances of this custom Zclass are placed in folders within my site... I have additionally developed a Zcatalog ("Catalog"), which lives at the root of the zodb. Its only contents are news items and it has been indexed on all the properties of the news item. Additionally, metadata properties are the same as the indexed properties. What I want to happen is this... when someone adds an instance of a news item, I want it to be immediately added to the zcatalog "Catalog" and become visible on the "home" page of the site through dtml like this:   news: <A HREF="/"></A>  Now this sort of works... this dtml snippet will display just "news:" when a new instance of the News Item zclass is added to the site, meaning that it KNOWS there's a new instance of News Item.... for each news item that gets added, it will display another instance of the text "news:". So on my front page, if I have five news items zclass instances in my site, it'll look something like this: news: news: news: news: news: However, it wont display any of the dynamic content eg. , , etc. until I go into the Catalog Zcatalog and manually update the catalog. Once I manually update the zcatalog, I get content like: AppDev news: This is news. etc.... Why is this? Any ideas?

If I can't actually show you how the Z Classes on Zope.org work, perhaps I can explain what the 'Zope.org way' to tackle your problem would be. On Zope.org, all content (okay, almost all, but forget about that for the moment) is owned by a Member, who is responsible for it. The content is all contained in the folder of the Member who owns it. That means the location is irrelevant to the content-- all our HowTos for instance are scattered willy-nilly throughout our much-appreciated Member's folders, not unlike your author's folders. When you go to /Documentation/How-To, you are shown a list of all the HowTos members have submitted to the Catalog. These HowTos are all still 'physically' located in each of the Membership folders. The Z Catalog allows us to present them all in one place, simply by asking the Z Catalog for everything who's meta_type is HowTo. You could do the same thing for magazine issues: Add an 'issue' property to your article objects, and then add a 'FieldIndex' index called 'issue' to your Z Catalog. Once you have that, you can build a simple Issue object that knows how to ask the Z Catalog for all objects belonging to a given issue, and present them in a nice periodical format. It could even be smart enough to translate the paths you want to use (like my.zine.com/issues/01/02) into a search for items belonging to issue 01, volume 02, or what have you.
