How do I use Zope for XML-RPC?

I'd like to use XML-RPC to communicate between a Zope on Sun/Solaris and a Zope on Win NT. I thought I read somewhere that Zope supports XML-RPC, but I can't see how it is done. Does Zope support XML-RPC out of box, or is some assembly required? Does Zope ORB parse XML-RPC requests/responses? How does it know it's getting XML-RPC? By the Content-Type? Is there any support in Zope for a method to create XML-RPC requests and responses, or does the method have to generate XML itself? -- Thanks -- Loren

Simplifying complex contexts/urls

I'm developing a site with Zope that has a lot of interlinking between objects, and after clicking around for a while, the context (aka, the url path in the browser's address display) gets really long and complex. So far, I haven't had any problems with it, but I do have two concerns. 1. It starts to look pretty ungainly. This doesn't bother me too much, but I don't know how users will respond. 2. There must be some limit on the length of the allowable url in the browser's display. What are the chances that an extended session of clicking around will run into that limit? So, I'm wondering if there's some way to automatically simplify a path to its most elemental form. For example, www.mysite.edu/main/topicA/topicB/topicC/topicA/topicB becomes www.mysite.edu/main/topicA/topicB. Thanks. Chris

Lost inheritance

Hello... I had a test Squishdot (0.1.5) site that was working and had some content, and now it breaks when posting a new article (other features seem to work). I can add a new Squishdot site and it works, but the old one doesn't. The last time I posted was before I upgraded to Zope 2.0.0 from 1.10.3, so it may be due to that. I've also changed non-Squishdot parts of the web site. I've looked at the traceback and into the source files, but do not know enough Zope, Python, or Squishdot (or Confera) to understand what happens. In Squishdot, the addPostingForm DTML_Method has a form with an action of ".". I assume this loads the index_html of the Squishdot site which then processes the form data and then renders the updated front page. But when I look at index_html, I can't see how it would do that. Clearly I don't understand the inner workings. Note that I applies the patch Nick Garcia mentions in: http://www.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-September/009352.html and search for other relevant articles, but found nothing. With Jeffrey's help I fixed my dtml-with problem. However, attempting to use the same technique in another Method in the same Folder is giving me other problems: Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: __getitem__ The following is the DTML Method giving the error. It is being called by a form POST method; the only fields on the form are 1) a hidden field named 'sReportTypeID' with value 'no' to indicate a new insertion as opposed to an edit, and 2) a field named sDescription. tblReportTypeInsertOrUpdate is a SQL Method that inserts/changes the record referenced by sReportTypeID. If sReportTypeID is 'no', the SQL Method performs an insert followed by a select, as I am using an IDENTITY column (monotonically increasing auto-index field). DTML Method at /Reporting/Admin/editReportType: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-with adminSQL>  <dtml-in tblReportTypeInsertOrUpdate> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('sReportTypeID', reportTypeID)"> </dtml-in> </dtml-with>  <dtml-with "_.namespace(renderType='edit', renderID=sReportTypeID)"> <dtml-var renderReportType> </dtml-with> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> The REQUEST.set is intended to pass the new request type ID for use later in the method. (better ways of doing this...? perhaps do this in the SQL method instead?) The problem is that once the manager logs into that site they get the following on the right hand screen (after some traversing in their 'neck of the woods') Folder at /nle / dnle / nle / dnle / nle / dnle / nle / dnle Which, although the site appears to work ok, is an additional bit of confusion for the manager. Additionally, some people on the list have recommended using; RewriteRule ^(.*) /home/nnle/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi/nle/dnle/$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] rather than RewriteRule ^/(.*) /home/nnle/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi/nle/dnle/$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] although the latter does (almost) work (the almost being this issue with repeating folder names). You also need ZMySQLDA, which you should find somewhere on www.zope.org. BUT, you also need to apply the patch for ZMySQLDA which is in the MySQLdb distribution; otherwise ZMySQLDA uses an older MySQL interface (MySQLmodule-1.4) which is designed for MySQL-3.21.
